GoodLife Fitness Club, Waterloo Reviews (2)
the good life has moved somewhere else
When my wife got breast cancer, she tried to cancel her membership with Good Life over the phone. She had not attended in over a year anyways, and never belonged to Good Life in the first place. She was automatically adopted when that women only place on Weber St. was bought out.
A few months later I realized they were still charging my account a small fee that they described as a "hold" fee... About $20 every two weeks. I put a stop payment on it, hoping they would buzz off.
I called the place and explained to them what was happening, and they said they'd sort it out. A few months later we get a bill for $130, and they're saying if we don't pay it they'll go to the collectors. I tried to explain to numerous reps over the phone that my wife probably hasn't felt like doing deep knee bends or tricep pull-downs, you know, DUE TO THE CANCER, and the fact that her membership, as far as she knew, was effectively cancelled months earlier.
They didn't care. They made me pay. They would not connect me with a manager or a supervisor, because as they said, "managers don't attend calls". And apparently they don't attend the sites either. HERE IS THE REVIEW THEY DESERVE FOR BEING SO COMPASSIONATE.
Do not use.

It is very regretable that you had this experience. If the club had been doing their job then they should have explained to you that you do in fact have to go into the club to cancel a membership irregardless of the circumstances. If it was for a medical reason, such as this was, they should have also told you that you can provide a note from your doctor in order to put the membership on a $0 hold. As it is, the hold fee is only $5 bi-weekly, so if you were paying $20 then it sounds like that was your original price.
Absolutely putting a stop payment on your account wouldn't have done you any good. There was no documentation within the club with yours or your wife's signature requesting the cancellation. Any time anyone wishes to make any changes to their memberships they should ALWAY go into the club and get it in writting... otherwise, what proof do you have that it was actually done. It is your word against the word of the company, and in my experience, it is always the paperwork that wins out. Without that proof, then why would they refund or cancel an outstanding balance?
If there ever is a problem or an issue that you really cannot get into the club, then the staff should have directed you to the head office # which can also be found on their web site. All those calls are recorded and they are able to do things over the phone that the in-club staff are physically not able to do.
It really does make me mad that the manager wouldn't make the time for you and that these proceedures were not explained to you properly. GoodLife prides itself in being a great company with outstanding customer service. They've been one of the top 50 best managed companies in Canada for 8years in a row. If this is the experience you've had with that club, then I would say your best bet is to call the 1-800-387-2524 and let them know directly. The staff at that club should know better and should be following proceedure! They are there to help their members, not themselves!
All in all, I have been with GoodLife for many workout years and feel that they are a great company!
