Laurent's Reviews

Warm ambiance and staff

As it is pretty cold, and that I was outside, I went for this restaurant that I didn't know before.

First I really enjoyed the interior design, while simple, is pretty nice with a lot of wooden furniture.

The staff was always excellent and friendly.

There was a pretty wide choice on the menu as advertised, it's mainly korean (that owners seemd to be korean) and japanese food.

The food was not bad, but not exceptional either.

Overall I would recommend it if you are around the yonge and bloor area.

YOUR AVERAGE BURGER PLACE

Buried inside the gas station, the burger's taste is really the same as everywhere. Some tables are crooked, half the staff is smiling nicely the other half seems to have had a bad day (everyday).Besides that it's still good to change restaurant once in a while. But now there is some competition with the new 'terra burger' place opened recently close by...

Enough to fill you up

I went there after watching a movie and really wasn't up for cooking myself.
So when I passed by "cafe crepe", I went it to try it out.

It was quite busy actually.
The waitress was nice and smiling which is definitely a plus.

As usual, don't expect the salty crepes to be done with the right flour, they use the same for sweet and salty.

I ordered a ham, cheese and egg (+ extra feta) for the salty one, and a nutella, coco for the sweet one.

I have to say that usually I can eat 3, sometimes 4 crepes, but there it's so thick that 2 was enough.

The taste was ok, but definitely far from being a threat for home cooked crepes...

Nice enough!

I couldn't give a better rate since it's only a fast food.
But the people there are cool, remember good customers.
And since I'm going there at least twice a week, you can tell I am a regular.

It's just that around this area, if you don't have the Doolaaar necessary to go to a fancy restaurant everyday for lunch, it's imo the freshest, and healthiest thing around for a cheap price.

back when i lived alone, i was such a die-hard subway fan that i knew the sub of the day menu like the back of my hand. id get a the sub of the day everyday (except monday and wednesday; meatball and pizza...yuck), sometimes twice.

god those were good days.

yeah i like the wraps at subway ... and that's about it. i feel like its such a breadheavy meal -carbs carbs carbs- chewy baquette wannabe .. and then they try to "toast it" that one kills me lol (that bread isn't really toastable/toastworthy)... i donno .. quiznos is definitely a step above, i guess you get what you pay for right?

Very nice place

For people who needs something very japanese, go there !
You can find a lot of different things from food to magazines.

I personally bought some sweets filled with red beans, it's great.

They also have sets of chopsticks, potteries, various groceries... Really for a store this small it's great and comes right from Japan.

Go with an empty stomach...

I went to Demetre's with coquettish and another friend because I felt like indulging my sweet tooth.

The place itself is pretty big and has a patio, which is nice when it's sunny.

The menu has a lot to offer and is trying to be original and fun. We all ordered some tea and cakes.
You'd better be really hungry because it's a lot to eat.
None of us could finish the whole thing but if you want you can have it to go.

The service is ok, they are not all over you all the time, which I appreciate. I had once to go after a waiter for a glass of water but that's no big deal.

Overall it was a good moment with friends and good (and heavy) cakes.

It's funny because this weekend I walked past a Cafe Demetre and thought "I wonder if Laurent has ever been here... I have heard they have good crepes"... and what do I find when coming in to work, a review!

Good food

I went to Pickle Barrel out of curiosity.
It was a good choice.
We had to wait a little bit because it was busy, but we didn't have to stand up, they had a place to seat and wait while browsing the menu.

I ordered a big canadian burger and it was really good.
After that I had an ice cream with cookies.
An advice, order one for two people, it's really big !

The waitress always had a smile and was very nice (maybe she just had a good day :) ).

Just a little thing that turned me off: I dropped a coin on the floor and moved the table to get it... You don't want to know all the stuff i found under it.

Pickle Barrel used to be really awesome but it has gone down hill since it gained popularity. I still enjoy it though, and my family sometimes goes there when we need to celebrate but can't afford to pay for everyone at a higher class place.

I have never tried the burger but I will have to make a point to when I go again.

So true! Sarah's right it has gone down hill a bit but the cheesecake is to die for and needs to be split!!! Gross table, isn't that against health codes??? I'll make sure I don't wear sandals!

Cheap imitation crepes...

Good ambiance, the place is really nice with a fireplace.
The staff is good.

Now concerning the crepes, I was very disappointed.
I am french and love eating crepes, so cardboard was not what I expected to eat...

The batter used is the same for the sweet and the salty ones, which is absolutely not right. For sweet, use all purpose flour, for salty ones is buckwheat flour. This is the basics, so for a creperie with so much "awards" I expected better.

PS: the pictures added are to show how it is supposed to look like, it is not the restaurant's crepes.

UPDATE: I just noticed that on their website they actually write about using buckwheat flour. So I guess they know how to make it with the right flour, but it's surely cheaper to use all-purpose flour...
