KAT's Reviews

And a good time was had by all

Those of you who follow my reviews (lie to me, baby, I promise I'll believe) know that I like cover bands. No. I LOVE cover bands. I love that their repetoire always seems to be current as of 2002. I love that they are always a bit cheesy, yet totally enthusiastic. I love that the more you rock out, the more they rock out.

This Sunday night a particular girls night of "a few drinks to catch up" went terribly wrong. Someone (me) brought up a desire to dance and it was over. We made our way over to the Orbit Room where cover band Stiffler's Mom was playing (the Orbit Room always features tons of great musicians, not just cover bands). We were drinking, we were dancing, we were a mess. There was falling, stumbling, hair tosses, squeals of delight, new friends and some of my best girls.

Unfortunately the drinks slowly began to overpower our abilities to stand upright, and so we had to cut our evening off a bit early. But as I sat in class the next morning in the same clothes I had been wearing the night before I thought, "it was worth it. It was definitely worth it."

I love the Orbit room!

By: LAUREN

The Orbit Room sounds fantasic! If I would have come with you that night, I'm sure I would have randomely made friends with the lead singer of the band, done random shots, ran tabs on my credit card behind the bar and then cancelled my credit card only to find it in my bra later and become ridiculously intoxicated and dance like a hair-metal stripper. However, I probably wouldn't have fallen on the stage numerous times, leaving a gash on my back that is still there as evidence of the debauchery that goes on in the Orbit Room.
That is... IF I had gone.

I know you can be overwhelmed and you...

Brunch is a Toronto institution. Dont fuck it up. Those whom the Drake has dubbed "neo-cool, post-modern alt-hipsters (no, seriously, they have)", a breed rarely seen during daylight hours, hit the streets in droves on Saturday and Sunday afternoons in search of brunch. You can spot them by their ironic sunglasses and last night's outfit.

ANYWAY, these people are serious about brunch. The Drake has designated itself centre of the trendy Queen West West district (I beg to differ), but they suck at brunch.

We wandered in on Saturday after a failed attempt at a different brunch spot. The streetside patio was full of happy brunch-goers, the weather was great, we got a prime spot in the shade, there were complementary croissants and jam- things were looking up. We ordered two breakfast burritos (a brunch staple!). They arrived quickly, then the fun stopped. They were bland. Really bland. I dont know how you mess up burrito- they are, by...

i bet the mcdonald's breakfast burritos are better. THAT is saying something. cardboard wrapped in a tortilla can be yours for a mere $3.99 at mickey d's...im guessing a whole $10 cheaper than at the drake.

I believe they were $9. but they also didnt come with the guilt and inordinately large amount of unpronouncable chemicals which mcdonalds provides with every meal, I think that is actually a plus one for the drake.

Cheese is magical..who knew?

The battle over best cheese shop in Kensington Market rages on. Cheese Magic or Global Cheese? Both have great selections of cheese you would never find in a big box supermarket. In both you will be served by someone who really knows cheese. At both you can sample cheeses you didnt know existed. You will leave both with far more cheese than you need.

But I have needs. Spicy havarti and strong brie, yes. But I also need (maybe not NEED) hot mans seductively (this part could be my imagination) suggesting the perfect emmantel for my occasion while giving me sexy eyes. Okay, I dont need that. But if my options are get delicious cheese at a great price and get delicious cheese at a great price while flirting with a gouda looking man, well I will take the latter every time. If all food stores staffed themselves with only hot mans and angelina jolie look alikes (Cheese Magic does not, to my knowledge, have one of these) then I would start cooking all the time.
PS- my boyfriend always chooses Global Cheese.

i put that in there just for you!

I'm what you might call a regular...

...because I am there most days of the week. I love the Red Room for many reasons.
a) I always get the sexy waiter
b) No one bothers you when you want to sit by your onsies, read a book, and have a beer
c) It's also a fantastic place to go with friends
d) It is also great for cozying up with a date
e) The food is cheap. Really cheap. Nothing over $7. Fantastic.

In conclusion, feel free to go to the Red Room, just dont take my favourite table (maybe its a booth, or a couch, or on the patio. I'm not telling!)

i am all for price reasonable food .. but sometimes you just have to wonder where do they cut corners to get such low prices ;-)

By: JENNYK

i hear you on the spotty service. for the most part its good but sometimes it can feel like you're a hinderance to them or something.

the only other con is that the patio is really small...on busy nights, you'll be lucky if you get a seat, even if you do wait around a while.

A Great, Hidden Spot

Julie's is a secluded spot with a great patio, it certainly doesnt feel like you are in Toronto (of course, it doesnt really feel like Cuba either). It is on Dovercourt, very close to Queen, but there isnt a group of drunk hipsters in sight.

The mango avacado salad is a must, as is the black bean soup. We carried on choosing a selection of tapas, unfortunately as vegetarians we were limited to a small selection of potato and plantain based dishes, all of which were delicious, but filling. We had fallen asleep before we finished the walk home.

The food was great, the staff sweet and attentive, but I would only go back for a light lunch (though it was honestly the soundest sleep I have had in months!)

Our Midday Dining Spectacular!

It was a warm and sunny weekday when a few n49ers were cut loose from our office and sent to the streets of Toronto to feel our darling city's pulse (and run into Beyonce's crew). Before we could get down with Toronto we needed some nosh and headed over to the Rivoli's streetside patio. Our waiter was exceedingly cute, our boss was paying, and we had the go-ahead on daytime drinks: we were pleased (and tipsy).

There were two chicken wrap type things for steph and jennyk. They both looked delightful (see photos) and judging from the fact that there were no leftovers, they were tasty. A very skeptical silver had his very first roti. After complaining about presentation, he took a bite and ate his words, the roti was delish (though really, really large).

I had the Queen Mother burger (the Riv and its neighbor, The Queeen Mother, are owned by the same people/person/chef/droid) which is a delicious and, according to...

Bring your loonies

The people at the Baldwin laundromat are quite nice, and they do a mean (in the good way) wash and fold ($1/pound) but they are extremely overpriced in the DIY department. A regular washing machine is $2.25, going up in size to $4 and $4.75. Dryers are $.25 for every 5 minutes. I thought laundromat prices were a standard thing, but apparently not. Just across Spadina in the market there is another laundromat with slightly more standard prices.

Well they have a great mascot

I like the logo these people have happening. I was excited about it, despite the fact that my father has never, to my knowledge, sported a 'stache. Unfortunately they served my sister and I two of the driest, crumbliest, blandest, ickiest veggie burgers I have seen in my time. This is a feat. I have been veg nearly 10 years and have witnessed the evolution of veg food and even the early veggie burgers weren't this bad.

Now the service was great. The girls were friendly, quick, and thoughtful which leaves me to believe that, were I a carnivore, this review would be quite different.

Now to the people resposible for outfitting these girls: those shirts make them look like sausages. Not your fault girls, Kate Moss would look like a sausage in that shirt. Let your ladies wear something flattering!

Pogue Fado, Oh You Should GO

Okay. Toronto, deligtful place except: it is up to its eyeballs with hipsters, clubbers, scenesters, yuppies, and everyone else trying to out-cool the next guy, and thus has a stick up its you-know-what, and thus getting down with your bad self is often an effort wasted in a sea of swoopy-hair posers looking around to see if anyone is watching them breathe, seductively sip on their appletini or pbr, and toss their hair about (BTW, love this city, I am just saying).

Halifax. Getting down wiht your bad self is the only way Halifax knows how to get down. Of course no one told me so I went out in a trendy haircut, "ironic scarf" (horsies!!), and hooker-esque earrings (bricolage, you better believe I am in uni). You will see this demonstrated in photo 1 of this review. Saunter over to photo 2 and you will see scarf and earrings are in the purse (well you wont SEE the inside of my purse, but trust me) and I am so drunk on gin and tonic (STRONG!), singing along...

guys who just want to dance? JUST dance? and not the "forbidden dance"?

sign me up, because my days of getting blatantly fondled in packed toronto clubs are OVER. what a breath of fresh air.

Sigh

I loved everything about this place. Our waitress was cute, attentive, and helpful, she also had great style. She went out of her way to make me an iced coffee, a beverage not on their menu. The patio is a little slice of heaven on the Dundas West strip. Brunch was delicious. I had a tasty omelette with goat cheese, capers, and fresh veggies. Part way through sharing it with my boyfriend I made a comment about how more foods should have capers. Apparently he is alergic to capers. Ooops. We both got delicious rosmary roasted potatoes. He had some sort of egg/veggie sandwich, which was great.

All of me, really, all of me wants to be able to rave about this place. But as my brunch exited my body much more quickly and violently than it had entered, i lost my reslove. I cannot rave about this place. So I call on you, my fellow n49ers. Go to this place (as I surely cannot go back) and prove me wrong. Bring some pepto bismol.

i must say, i love capers too. they are a very underrated food (garnish? vegetable? fruit? plant? what, pray tell, are they exactly?) that should be used more often. although according to the multitude of shows i watch on the food network, they're considered very "70's" and therefore not hip with the contemporary food steez (which is something i've never really followed, nor cared about).

that being said, no amount of capers would propel me to visit this place, kat. while the food sounded delish, i can't bring myself to pay good money just to have it come out the other end as quickly as i can say "waste of moola". the thoughts stewing in my head as to what the causes of this dietary expulsion were (food poising? including ex-lax as an ingredient?) are enough to make me take your word for it and wait to hear other positive n49 reviews before i try it out for myself.

By: STEPH

Eww you got sick and that SUCKS! I wonder what it was that did it?!
I've eaten at Musa before and felt a-ok! I hope that they haven't changed their ways since the last time I went.
