Very Pleased.
I had my surgery on April 5, 2016. For the most part everything went very well. As with most things, some nurses were great and some were just ok. I was in and out during the surgery while feeling some discomfort, pulling and tugging - which I expected. It seemed to go very quickly and was back in my room in no time. Most people were up and walking within 4-5 hours after returning to their room. I had some sort of negative reaction to the anesthetic which didn't allow me to walk until the next day. When you are able... walk, walk walk. That seems to be the key to healing and getting the blood flowing throughout your body. It's been 4 days and I'm trying to back off on the Tylenols which means the pain is getting better. The hospital at first looks a bit dated, but when you get used to it - it actually has a cool retro feel. The food is excellent and everyone commented how great their meals were. The dining room staff was very friendly and tried to accommodate any special requests. Initially, I thought the 4 night stay was overkill, but after going through it - it totally makes sense. I read these reviews in advance and didn't go for the massage. When they were promoting it, half the patients jumped on the idea... I didn't. Later I asked and every single person told me that it was horrible and a complete waste of time. Keep your $70 for a "real" massage later on, after you feel better. I had to meet at least 10 other patients that all had regular hospital hernia treatment anywhere from 1-10 years ago and they all failed. Shouldice is the right choice - the first time! My only reason for not giving 5 stars is that I found the doctors to always be in a hurry. I know they do a lot of surgeries, but they never seemed to have time to answer questions. I think part of the reason is that this is a private hospital and could certainly teach public hospitals a lesson in efficiency. The doctors do give you the time in advance of the surgery and you meet with several of them. I met with the surgeon, family doctor, nutritionist and several nurses all on the premises. Overall very happy that this is behind me and that I chose Shouldice.
