Not recommended for serious students
I've taken a number of courses at different institutions in B.C., including SFU and UBC. SFU was probably my worst experience.

Academically, it is the only school I've been to that appeared to "dumb down" its courses to cater to poorer performing the point where I had one 2nd year prof that lectured on essay basics (this wasn't an English course) and sent an email reminding students that our papers should have opening paragraphs. Not all of the courses were that bad, but the best course I took was what I would consider in any other institution to be an average university course. The worst was like being in high school.

This brings me to one of the most aggravating aspects of SFU, which is the paternalistic treatment of students. Profs that dock marks if your cell rings in class, profs that insist you include different types of items in your bibliography to prove you know how to reference them ... they may not take academics too seriously, but they sure do love their weird rules!

Finally, I found the quality of profs to be not great. I liked some of them as individuals but the courses were lacking, and the motivation to strive for excellence just didn't seem to be there. One prof was super young and seemed to be teaching a course he knew nothing about. One used his own text book--which was atrociously written and terribly inaccurate--and posted discussion topics that consisted of "read the chapter in the text and talk about what you thought was most interesting" (and that was Communications, something SFU is supposed to have a good reputation for). One made us write our "term paper" in class as a way to prevent cheating.

There was lots of aggravation at SFU, but not for any GOOD reason.

Oh, and the customer service isn't great either.

It might be a good school to "hand hold" people that are coming out of high school and aren't really ready for the full-on university experience, but, if my experience is any indication, it will annoy the heck out of anyone that actually WANTS to learn and excel.

My favourite schools were UBC and Thompson Rivers
