Walking into this place felt like stepping back into the 1970s. Its vintage style has been beautifully preserved, giving it an authentic charm that’s becoming harder and harder to find. In a city like Toronto, which is constantly changing and sometimes feels more like a large American metropolis, this restaurant really stood out to me.

The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, the service is genuinely friendly, and the lively mix of people who come here makes the experience even more enjoyable. It’s one of those places that makes you feel comfortable the moment you walk in.

I had the hamburger with Canadian bacon (peameal), and it was delicious. But I have to admit, seeing all the egg dishes coming out of the kitchen made my mouth water. They looked amazing! Next time I’m back in Toronto, I’ll definitely be ordering one of those.

$17 for a Salmon Benny in Toronto? Sign me up and the quality of the meal was soooo yummy too! We went there for brunch, and it was the best decision! We ordered Salmon Benny, Waffles, and Spinach Omelette and everything came out very fast and perfect! It’s a peaceful, quiet neighborhood diner in the middle of the city and all day breakfast and the ambiance makes you feel like it’s a diner in a tiny town, very nostalgic!

This diner is a gem in so many ways. First, thsnks to Irene, the server with the dark hair and the real smile, for making people feel good! She has a real talent and can handle a full house beautifully. (The woman with the white hair who used to work there all the time, is not very visible now. She was cranky and not at all friendly.) Food is consistently good, but ask questions so you get exactly what you hope for. Portions are big. The guys in the kitchen are very skilled. A happy experience.

A hidden gem in Toronto. Amazing old-school comfort food — I’ve eaten several times and it never let me down. The prices are fair and the portions are generous, especially their steak and pork chops. My favorite is their peameal bacon, which is salty, savory, and nicely textured. It goes perfectly with eggs and toast.
The restaurant has also kept its mid-century interior and classic diner atmosphere. Eating here honestly feels like stepping back in time!

This place has everything you can ask for in a restaurant. 1) the old, classic style, mom n pop, homey feels. 2) great cooks. Its not fancy like those Michelin star chefs but what's on their menu comes with great ingredients and cooked the well! 3) staff is on point qith service and friendly ❤️. I just always have a great vibe from this place. From the service to the cleanliness to the quality & portion size of the food. Fro. Breakfast to lunch to dinner. Fair prices, as well. So I hope everyone that works at the Golden Diner know I appreciate everyone's service there and that you will alway have a guaranteed customer 😀

We ordered from here for delivery several times over the past 6 weeks while stuck in Toronto for Medical reasons. We found the food was good and prices reasonable. It is a diner and that should be kept in mind when ordering. If you want a steak house go a steak house but for a simple tasty homecooked meal this is the place to go.

There are very few of these places left in the city the kind with their original interiors still intact, sitting half-submerged below the sidewalk, completely untouched by whatever glossy trend is happening above ground.

I navigate the world with a soundtrack playing, living in a daydream where life unfolds exactly like a movie. For a long time, I had only walked past those basement-level windows on Carlton Street, looking in from the outside. The framing was always perfect, like a still from a film you already know you love. Today, I finally walked down the steps and stepped directly into the scene.

It was a Monday afternoon, and a sudden lunch rush had flooded the room. I sat there watching the solo server handle the floor, and it was pure, beautiful choreography. When you experience life cinematically, you notice the rhythm the way one person can hold the entire spatial map of a busy diner in their head, moving seamlessly from table to table without the rhythm breaking for a second. It wasn't stressful to watch; it was a perfect performance of an old-school diner operating exactly as it was built to.

Sometimes you overthink what a place like this will be, but the reality was exact. The Montreal smoked meat sandwich arrived, and it tasted exactly the way the space looked: honest, classic, and grounded. It is a rare and beautiful thing when a physical space perfectly matches the daydream you had about it from the street. I got exactly what I wanted, right down to the frame.

A great old school diner, period!!! I'm sure it's been around for a while. Understandably so, delicious food. I had the turkey club with fries and gravy, coleslaw. It was very good. Great specials, along with a well rounded menu. Booths as well as sit up spinny stools at counter, lots of available seating. Our server was excellent, gave good suggestions. Definitely will be going back... saw pork chops come out for a customer, I gotta get me some of those!!!😋 🥓🌭🍔🧆🥩🍗🥪🌯

This restaurant we have eaten at or taken out from on multiple occasions, usually we order breakfast but today we ordered dinner. The older lady ( waitress ) is absolutely amazing and truly a great part of this restaurant. Today we ordered the 8 oz newyork steak dinner it comes with a salad either Greek or chefs, potatoes or mashed tatters and vegetables and or rice.

Exactly what I want in a diner. Solid choice of classic breakfast dishes, affordable prices, cozy vibe, and free coffee (with meal). Came here to catch up with friends from out of town and had a lovely time.

Had the waffles and eggs, scrambled eggs and bacon were well cooked, waffles were delicious. The whipped butter added a lot, but they only have table syrup. I don’t mind, but could be a problem for some people. A friend had the golden omelette which looked excellent. Home fries could have been crispier but were solid.

The clientele was older adults and students. Parties larger than 4 may find it difficult to sit together, most seating is 4 person booths. Service was fine, but our server seemed distinctly out of it, forgot our toast. Not a big deal but frustrating.

It’s a welcoming place with classic, affordable breakfast. What more do you want?

On Aug 23 2025 my girlfriend and I were helping my son move into a dorm on Carlton Street. While parked outside directly in front of this diner, we saw a lot of people going into and out of the place. My girlfriend said she saw staff help several elderly folk down over the couple of steps and even carried down walkers and wheelchairs for them. Obviously very caring staff. We deduced that the place was popular and decided to try. We ordered brunch from a very quiet and respectful gent. The food was very fresh and the portions were awesome! Please understand that this is a diner environment and space that opened over 60 years ago, so don't expect fine dining or decor. But the place is clean, the staff are very friendly and the food was excellent AND well priced. I will be back !!!

Yum! This beaten up old diner has been here for so many years we ran out of fingers and toes. And hair, and wrinkle-free skin ; )
But it's good!
Don't follow your instinct, follow the servers suggestions. They know if the steak will be toughish, or if the chicken parm is brutto today.
Me? I recommend the greek salad (always fresh, crispy and tasty) and amongst the BEST things they do - trust me here - is FISH & CHIPs. Crunchy and satisfying. They are excellent! No dieting allowed, kids. Large servings, so wear fat pants.

Food here is hit and miss. Omelets are good. Ask for the home fries to be well done. A lot of the booths are sagging seat wise. Greek salad is very good. Chopped steak was tough. Chicken parm was tough. Some nice people in the kitchen and the wait staff has distinctive personalities. It is fun to sit in the GD and see people above this basement level place walking by. The place is what it is. Choose well and you will have a good
experience.
