racial slurs aside this location sucks in the most elementary ways. for one the girls working the front are cold and i suspect polite racists reason being i approach the counter and am greeted with a scowl and otherwise subtle crass demeanor. fair enough we all have bad days and frankly i don't need the Mc-attitude everytime i eat fast food and i can appreciate when people are real even in a shitty menial job. she then treats any questions i may have as a mild nuisance. i sit down and can't help but notice i'm the only visible minority in the place and am otherwise surrounded by gawkers of Italian descent; fine by me... really; how often do these people see a man with dreads? get a good look. i then notice the this same cashier i took for having a bad day seems to lighten up and put on the Mc-attitude whenever dealing with a fellow italian "compagno" strange no. i kinda took this as a hint to take my food on the go and then check the soggy sandwich for spit which i did in my car (sandwich was 2 stars at best). if this place were any friendlier it would have pictures of Mussolini on the walls and a colored only outhouse round back with the word "Melanzana" on it. the thing is i have been to the claremont location and loved it but the queensway is an ass-backward socially inept gangrenous offshoot of the original in need of an amputation. boycott Queensway California Sandwiches, home of old fashioned food and even older closet racism. i could only really recommend this place for the novelty of a diner with jim crow attitude in a modern setting.

Additional business details

The first California Sandwiches is the Claremont location, still hidden in Toronto's little Italy region. In the late 1960's it was a grocery store that was purchased by the Papa/Bertucci family. They quickly discovered they had something special, as customers were coming for lunch instead of the groceries. They decided to capitalize on this opportunity as their hot Italian sandwiches were selling out daily. Thus the first California Sandwiches was born. From its inception in "La Rinacente" (the stores first name), the veal sandwich has become one of Toronto's favorite meals. Today, very little has changed. There are now 8 locations all family owned and operated. Traditional methods of food preperation are still in practise. Each store has its own butcher and the meat is cut on site. Only the finest in Italian tomatos are ground for the sauce that is made fresh daily. The kaiser buns are baked every morning and are delivered by an Italian bakery. Cheeses and produce are bought and prepared for use as needed. Quality food and attention to detail have kept this business strong and valued. California Sandwiches is Toronto's favorite hot Italian sandwich. You can taste the difference!
