The civilian employees I’ve dealt with so far act not like I’m at their workplace to do some standard procedure like renew an ID, but instead I am bothering them at their house at 2AM...
I don’t know what it is: maybe it’s the difficulty of being fired, or the soulless bureaucracy they work in where they’re just cogs on a gear tooth in the machine that is the Federal Government, but over the past decade I don’t think I’ve found an occupation where a larger proportion of people in it are let’s say “discourteous” than civilian government employee bureaucrats.
On top of that, they refused to set an appointment over the phone for me because the government website wasn't letting me, even though other ID card offices have taken an appointment over the phone as recently as a few months ago.
They just don’t seem to care and can’t wait to go home.

They steal from veterans!!!! They pay them a portion of bonuses then claim it was overpayment and steal it on the back end!!!!
After repeatedly screwing up my pay, resulting in hours on the phone day after day I was finally able to speak with a “branch manager” in Cleveland. The fact that he position is branch manager is already concerning: you are not a bank. This gentleman refused to listen to anything I had to say, yet he expected me to thank him for solving his own mistake resulting in lost pay. There is zero accountability here, the buck was passed to every single person imaginable. Even well speaking with the fraud, waste and abuse hotline that also handles criminal allegations, they could not investigate because their system did not interface with the Cleveland office. I am required to deal with them for pay purposes, but I’ve learned that they will mess up the simplest tasks if you do not babysit them every single step of the way
I have never dealt with such an unprofessional agency in my life. They withheld child support and would not give me a clear answer as to why or when the issue would be resolved. They contradicted themselves during the same phone call multiple times like they were trying to hide something. When I said I relied on that child support for bills and my kids, I was spoken to in a condescending manner and hung up on. Unfortunately, dealing with DFAS is not a choice but just know that you will not be treated with no respect and you will be lied to by their legal department.
I'm giving them 5 stars because the woman that answered the phone was nice and seems like she wants to help. Even though she said her computer was crashing and she has to call me back. They are probably doing the best they can.
