Emperor Specialty Foods Ltd, founded in 1986, specializes in importing and distributing gourmet foods such as fresh and dried mushrooms, truffles, and other specialty ingredients. The company initially focused on fresh shiitake mushrooms but began importing mushrooms from China and local sources in 1995. By 1998, Emperor Specialty Foods Ltd became the first Canadian company to import fresh mushrooms from China via ocean shipment, significantly increasing their distribution throughout Canada and the U.S. In 2001, the company opened an office in China to strengthen supplier relationships and expand their offerings to include imported fruits and vegetables. They continue to produce certified organic shiitake mushrooms in Vancouver.
