Lovely place! Clean comfy king room with bird theme. Nice breakfast included. Great location and friendly staff. Will definitely come back.
This is the third time we've stayed at the Refuge Inn and it's always been a good experience. The staff is absolutely wonderful. The breakfast can't be beat. The location and grounds are awesome. Our only complaint is that the heating and air conditioning units in the rooms are loud. My husband is a light sleeper and this is the second time he's had trouble sleeping at the hotel. He said the unit sounded like someone was vacuuming in the room. The hotel is a bit older, and I'm sure the AC units get a workout so I kind of expect it. Other than the noisy unit, our stay was perfect. Even though the launch we came to see was postponed, we still got to be on island time.
I absolutely love the decor, they've done a wonderful job and every room has different furniture. I'd recommend this hotel in a heartbeat. But if you're a light sleeper, perhaps bring a sound machine or noise cancelling earbuds with you.

Lovely boutique style rooms, have stayed many times and it's the most exciting thing to open the door and see how beautifully each room is decorated. Close to the beaches, very comfortable beds, and cozy linens. Lovely breakfast delivered to our room and the lighthouse as a nightlight, ponies to greet you on arrival. What more could you ask?
We stay here every-time we come and it’s always so clean and cozy. The staff treat you like family and we love how each room is decorated different. You won’t find that at any chain! Highly recommended!
We've been going to the Refuge since fall of 1984, and we've never stayed any place else in Chincoteague. It's wonderful.
My sister and I went to the Refuge in Chincoteague for our birthdays 🎂 🥳 Very much enjoyed the breakfast in a bag, horses ,pool and the coffee bar. Thank you to Brandon ,front desk for all your help and guidance during our stay.Debbir and Ann marie
The Refuge Inn is appropriately named. We always find we can relax and unwind there and leave looking forward to our next visit.
The Refuge Inn is it a great location if you want to visit the national seashore, rooms are always clean about kept great service family friendly. What we like about it most is we can walk to our favorite restaurant, the Village.
I love sharing about this place since simultaneously don’t like to share because I don’t want the place to become so crowded that I can’t get a reservation.

A well maintained property, both inside & out. The quaint, & cozy old fashioned decor, found in both the rooms, & commen areas were warm, & inviting. A refreshing change from the newer hotels, with their cold utilitarian look, & ultra modern styling. The pool & hottub area was inclosed & heated offerings a refreshing respite from the cold fall evening. As well as a place to relax after biking in the conveniently close wildlife refuge. We are looking forward to a return visit .
The room was nice, would have liked no carpet. Loved the balcony overlooking the parking lot and pony pen! The shower head was awful and couldn’t be adjusted but it was powerful. The bed was comfortable. Staff were all very friendly! The gift shop is cute and has a lot of souvenirs. Enjoyed breakfast each morning delivered to the room - so nice to pick the time and items for each morning. The location is great, tucked in the pines with the pony pens next to it. Very close to the Assateague National Seashore, food trucks, and shops.
A clean & well maintained property, both inside, & out. The decor was old fashioned, it gave off a warm & cozy, feeling. Inviting, peaceful, an over all welcoming atmosphere. Not like a lot of newer places, that seem cold, & utilitarian. The pool & hottub where great especially after a long ride on our bikes. The staff was friendly & helpful .we are definitely looking forward to coming back again.
There were 2 couples during our visit. The rooms were very clean an comfortable. The front desk staff was helpful and friendly. We would definitely return.
Front desk were great. Breakfast delivered to your room. Quiet and peaceful. Ponies waiting to be fed across the parking lot. Only drawback were the mosquitoes. They were relentless.
This Inn was an absolute pleasure to spend a long weekend. The 2nd floor, pony viewing side was the best. Parking was plentiful. Check-in was extremely efficient. The staff were very accommodating. Breakfast was delivered outside our door each morning with a choice of delivery time. It was very quiet, though if you aren't careful shutting the doors, they can be loud. The beds are comfortable and the room size and furnishings were perfect. The amenities are nice, yet with the island outside your doorstep, ocean, and trails for bike riding, there was no need to use the amenities. I totally fell in love with this spot!
We loved our stay at the Refuge Inn. It exceeded our expectations. The rooms were beautiful and super clean. We were treated like family by everyone. Breakfast was delivered right to our room. The Inn is very close to the beach, and the Chincoteague Museum is almost directly across the road. It was also so quiet at night. We are planning to come back to the Inn in both the Spring and the Fall. Can't wait to come back!!!!
We have stayed at Refuge Inn several times and we will continue to do so. The rooms are comfortable, quiet, and clean... the beds and pillows are the best. Sometimes I think I sleep better there than at home :). The staff is helpful and friendly, the pool and hot tub are great, and the the way they deliver breakfast to your door is perfect. The location is great for us since we usually take our bikes and we can get over to Assateague to see the ponies easily. Really good place to stay... you should give it a try!
We had a great stay. The location is perfect- right next to the park and several restaurants. My kids loved the horses on site and the indoor pool. We really appreciated the way they served breakfast in the morning and they always had coffee available. The place has a lot of history and everyone was so friendly! Bonus- we loved the way their bar soap smelled! Thank you so much Refuge Inn for a wonderful stay!
We enjoyed another stay at the Refuge Inn. Our family has been coming to visit Chincoteague for the past few years and we always choose this hotel despite many newer options in the area. Its location and bike depot make for an easy and fun visit to the wildlife refuge and beach. The ponies outside make for a fun activity for kids (and adults!), the pool and hot tub are are great finish to a day of biking surrounded by lovely tropical plants. But what makes the hotel really special are the fantastic staff, who are friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. The hotel is unique for its very relaxed and non-corporate feel. Also … the excellent breakfast scones and beignets and coffee in the lobby are worth a try.
Local looking for a last minute staycation - five stars. It's the cutest place with a mom and pop feel (without feeling super dated). The pool is indoor and heated and surrounded by beautiful plants. The hot tub has a separate, small, gated-in area surrounded by more plants giving it a cozy, private feel. The room was clean, well decorated and comfortable.
And they deliver your breakfast right to the room. I love that.
Thanks so much for having us!!

We were recommended to stay here by their carpenter/handy man, Mike. What an incredible cozy place. We loved the games placed throughout the hallways and the DVDs that we could "rent". The observation deck was my favorite place. You could see a lot of stars. My fiance loved the pool area. It was heated with a nice place for sun and shade, including a hot tub! You can see ponies next door and the occasional feral kitty.
Absolutely unparalleled experience for a stay on the island!! From the time you are entered, you are treated like family and they go above and beyond to make your stay PERFECT! The breakfast delivered to your room was some abolutely phenomenal. Ponies on the property, couple minute drive to the beach, amazing observation deck, a beautiful pool, extremely clean, such friendly staff and comfortable beds are just some of the perks. I wouldnt stay anywhere else!!
Whoever designed the rooms must have stayed in hotels many times. Everything is conveniently arranged and the amenities are incredible. It is clean and the people are very freindly and genuinely concerned that your stay is comfortable. I hope that word of this place doesn't get out too much or we will have to start booking a year out!
We have been to Chincoteague a few times and it never disappoints. You cannot ask for a better place to stay at the Refugee Inn. Nestled in the pines this hotel is very family oriented and senior oriented. Close to food, trails and the National Shore.
Always a pleasure to stay at the Refuge Inn. Love the horsey, rustic decor and friendliness of staff. Clean rooms. They are always willing to accommodate. Chincoteague ponies on the property for your enjoyment. Cute little gift shop. Beautifully decorated swimming pool, hot tub, and sauna. No other place on the island I would stay. My only critique, however, is to make your reservations well in advance because they have a new system to determine pricing. The more booked they are, the higher the price for rooms. Even so, this is my go to when I visit the island. You will love it here!

The Refuge Inn is an island retreat where there's as little or as much to do as you choose. This local family owned and operated hotel is within walking distance of the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge and only minutes from the beaches of the Assateague Island National Seashore.
Nestled in whispering pines, the Inn is open year round and offers comfortable rooms and suites with private decks, balconies or patios, an indoor/outdoor pool, whirlpool, sauna, exercise room, sun deck, a Tesla and universal EV charger, and a guest laundry. In addition, guests are welcome to take advantage of bicycle rentals, a gift shop, hibachis, and picnic areas.
A meeting room holds 30-40 and is ideal for small conferences, meetings, and celebrations.
Perhaps the most unique feature of the Refuge Inn is their resident herd of Chincoteague Ponies. The ponies greet guests in the pasture year-round and are always glad to visit with guests and islanders alike.
