Named after the English explorer Sir Walter Raleigh, the metropolis is nicknamed the “City of Oaks” for the large number of majestic trees that dot its urbanscape. Raleigh is also renowned for the avant-garde technical activities that take place within it, which has earned it a spot in the Research Triangle. The name stems from the fact that Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill, the three innovative cities to hold the designations, form a triangular shape when their dots on the map are connected.
