We have taken our dog to numerous kennels over the years and are usually repeat customers. We decided to try Springfield to see how their service and facilities were and we were expecting good results, well, we were sadly mistaken.
The hours are horrible and if you miss their tight deadlines (even by 5 minutes) you will be charged ridiculous fees. The facility looked good from the driveway, however, since the kennels are tucked back in the trees, we never saw what the kennels looked like. The service was poor at best. It was short, with no questions asked about our dog or food requirement, just if he played well with others.
Since my dog cannot speak, I base my judgement on the customer service I receive.

I took my dog Riggs to Springfield Kennels this weekend for two nights. It was the first time I have ever left him overnight and was so nervous. But the owner John made me feel so comfortable leaving my dog there. He was down on the floor playing with Riggs the first 5 minutes that we were in the door. John even emailed us to let us know how Riggs was doing!! Riggs seemed like he didn't even want to leave and has slept for two whole days since coming home from the kennel. He's a blue heeler And needs lots of attention and exercise which I can guarantee you he received at Springfield! I haven't seen him this tired out in months!!!! We are going to Cuba in April and I wouldn't take Riggs to any other kennel! thanks again John for taking such good care of our baby!

I felt uneasy leaving my dogs there because the staff was not friendly, and didn't seem intrested in my dogs when she met them. My experience with other kennels is that dog lovers usually run them, I felt Springfield was more of just a business. She put my dogs in a run down room that was very cold. I asked my husband if I should ask if thats where they would be staying, he said no that can't be their room. When we came back to pick them up the next day they were still in the dirty cold wooden room, and the door was left open all hours to the outside. My 1 dog is very intolerant to cold (he has short hair and is only about 10 pounds) and it was about -8 during the day so prob at least -10 at night.
I also realized after dropping them off that they never asked to see their vaccination papers.
When we came to pick them up my dogs seemed very stressed especially my little one. They usually love going to the kennel (in Sylvan lake). I will never take my dogs back there again, the woman running it only seemed intrested in my money which was far too much for the service given and the facilities they operated (the dog kennel was basically a wooden shack).
If you love your dogs don't take them here!!!!

Hello Dawn.

I am one of the family that owns Springfield Kennels. I am distressed by your story, although I am not surprised by it.

In July 2006 we contracted a couple (Shaun and Russ Rathy) to operate the kennels. They were needed because the kennel founder had retired to live in New zealand. The Rathy's references were verified and they demonstrated a good knowledge of dogs.
Everything ran smoothly for the first year or so, but things got progressively worse.

Firstly over $10,000 of kennel cash income disappeared. The Rathys blamed this on their troubled son. Then we saw that kennel maintenance was not being done, then we started to get complaints from freinds and long time customers about the attitude of the managers, the hygiene and operation of the kennels. We discussed this with the managers and we were told that everything would be rectified.

The kennel has been family operated since 1971 and had a brilliant reputation. This was now in jeapardy.

Finally after no success geting the Rathys to improve, we terminaated their contract. It was only after this that records showed that over $100,000 was missing from the business during the years they were there. Even though they were told to push for payment by cheque or credit or debit card,
they would offer discounts for cash, not record the dogs visit, and pocket the proceeds.

Obviously the lost money was regrettable, but it is NOTHING compared to the damage to our kennel's excellent reputation built up over 40 years.

Dawn, your story is but one of the stories we have since heard from our clients who have returned. We dont know how many of our clients we have lost forever

Since the Rathy's were dismissed, the kennel has been run by a family member who has been working with dogs for many years. The kennels and grounds have been refubished and we have many new testimonials to the great service we offer, and how happy their pets have been at Springfield.

All I can do is appologise for the treatment you and your dog received. The Rathys were a bad experience for all concern.

I'm a dog walker from the area, have been for 8 yrs and I used the kennel myself when the Rathys were there, as well as many of my clients loved them. I have to say that when they were there they did a fantastic job. The kennels were always clean. They helped rehabilitate a lot of troubled dogs in the community with their dog training. And as far as dissatisfied customers go, they always seemed to be booked full. They never had a single dog die or get hurt as far as I know. Enough said.
They were got rid of to create a job for the family member that now runs it, I think its a brother or son of the actual owner. The same one that ran it before and had all kinds of trouble with dogs dying and getting hurt and sick, etc and HE lost tons of customers, not these folks. Now he runs it again, but whatever, there's lots of kennels.
Don't make excuses and don't make up lies about these good people that improved your clientele and reputation.
