Great West Life is a horrific company to deal with. Their employees who are processing medical claims know very little about health care and terminology. Despite the resources they offer online to their clients, their staff are extremely poorly trained and ill equipped to deal with claims.

If the knowledge gap is not reason enough to stop dealing with them then let me take a moment to discuss customer service. Dealing with a disability claim and the diagnoses of 3 illnesses, all related to chronic pain, can be stressful on anyone. It becomes increasingly difficult to deal with when an insurance company who cares little about their customers and more about the almighty buck is handling your claim.

Great West Life belittled me. When asked about my stress level and discussing the loss of a family member, my caseworker Dorothy brushed it off as unimportant and irrelevant. I was consistently cut off while having my telephone assessment though I later found out at the end of our conversation that her choice for non support of my claim had already been mailed, despite what I thought was mandatory (the telephone assessment) for a claim decision to be made.

When dealing with Dorothy's manager, Mary, the service became worse. Not only was Mary completely unhelpful but was also extremely condescending and rude on the telephone. I did not once feel as though my concerns were being heard and all the while, Mary spoke to me as though I were a child. This is especially maddening when it is clearly evident that I have significantly more medical training that any of their employees. Or so it seems based on my experience with both Dorothy and Mary. Both of whom had no idea what procedures I was undergoing despite it being in my medical claim form and the access we all have to a little something called "google". Or, the Great West Life homepage!! Which, surprisingly, is a great source of information.

Great West Life has certainly lost my business. I want no part of anything that company touches. No business has succeeded in making me feel as belittled, unimportant, and irrelevant than this company.
