Dr. Mark Hughes is an assistant professor of medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and a core faculty member in the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics. He is faculty member in general internal medicine and in palliative medicine.  Dr. Hughes received his undergraduate degree in philosophy from the University of Virginia. He earned his medical degree from SUNY at Stony Brook School of Medicine. He completed his residency at the University of Rochester. He performed a fellowship in primary care research with a concentration in bioethics at Georgetown University, where he also completed a master’s degree in philosophy (bioethics). He joined the faculty of Johns Hopkins in 1997. His research interests include research ethics, clinical bioethics, ambulatory care, philosophy of medicine, end of life decision making, palliative care, and ethics education. Dr. Hughes serves as the co-chair of The Johns Hopkins Hospital Ethics Committee and Consultation Service and coordinates its monthly Ethics for Lunch sessions for the hospital community. Since 2002, he has been the director of a mandatory course on research ethics for all faculty principal investigators and fellows conducting human-subjects research in the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. He also directs a course on the responsible conduct of research for graduate students int he School of Medicine. He is director of Ethics in Clinical Practice Project, delivering clinical ethics education to several residency programs at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. He is co-developer and associate editor of the Physician Education and Assessment Center, a web-based curriculum utilized by medical residency programs across the nation. He is co-editor of the book Curriculum Development for Medical Education: A Six-Step Approach, now in its fourth edition.
