At the time the company was founded, Berlitz was geared primarily toward the needs of travelers and those studying for their personal enrichment. By the 1950s, however, the student body was beginning to change at Berlitz. Business people, professionals, and technicians headed for foreign posts began to require language skills for their new assignments, and major corporations were seeking to enroll large numbers of personnel — and their families — to learn languages as quickly as possible.
