SHADOW THEATRE

is an Edmonton-based theatre company founded in 1990.The company has been producing a regular main stage season since 1995. We are housed in The Varscona Theatre (176 seats) in the heart of Old Strathcona, directly opposite the Edmonton Farmers’ Market. We offer a subscription season consisting of modern classics, exciting contemporary plays from around the world and original Canadian works. An artistic core of four people, John Hudson (Artistic Director), Coralie Cairns (actor) and David Belke (playwright in residence) and John Sproule (Artistic Advisor) has nurtured the company’s development since 1992. We operate under the governance of a volunteer Board of Directors. The company currently operates with funding from municipal and provincial government agencies, foundations, private and corporate donations, corporate sponsorships and earned revenue. Earned revenue is our single largest revenue source, representing close to 50% of the company’s revenue base. Shadow Theatre is one of the two managing partners in the Varscona Theatre Alliance (in partnership with Teatro La Quindicina), benefiting the theatre community by operating on a volunteer basis a venue that hosts some 400 performances annually by a wide range of companies and artists. Shadow Theatre is the operating name for the Edmonton New Shadow Theatre Society, a Registered Charity.
