I recently retired from the Canadian Forces and settled in the Halifax region; my son has been seen at your office.

Today, I was diagnosed with shingles and required an eye exam within 24 hours. I presented myself at your office and explained the need for an emergency appointment. I was extremely disappointed with your reception staff. No compassion, understanding or empathy for a person in need. She told me that I could not been seen even though it was an emergency and would not ask a Dr. If an exception could be made.

The biggest disappointed, was how she reacted to my medical issue - following me out of the office while she dis-infected any possible surface I may have touch. She was clearly disgusted to see me in your office. Re-training and education is clearly needed; and those in the front line of medical services need compassion and understanding....I did not experience these traits.

Your front office staff will support or destroy your reputation; i did not get the chance to judge your competences. I was seen by another office and was treated as a human should be....and thankfully, my eye sight has not been compromised.

I am still extremely disappointed; I hope you never experience this medical issue or treatment.

Dear LCol K.F. Butterworth. Although it can be very difficult to squeeze in a complete eye examination if there are no openings, I am dismayed by the treatment you received at our office. I am at a loss as to why the staff person didn't at least ask a doctor if you could be seen or find out what to do if she wasn't able to see you. (e.g. assist you in finding an available doctor elsewhere) Our manager wasn't in today due to a family emergency; however, I know that she will certainly take steps to ensure this doesn't happen to another patient. I would love to do something to make this up to you, but certainly understand if you would rather not deal with us again. At the very least, I'm sure our manager Cindy would like to talk to you about your experience so we can learn from our mistake and not repeat it. If so, please call the office at 835-2020 and ask to leave a voice mail for Cindy. She is back in the office on September 15th. Alternatively, if you wish to talk to someone sooner, I would be happy to take your call myself on my cell at: 902-225-6805. Sincerely, Dr. Toby Mandelman

“I am one of the owners at Bedford Eye Care and was working yesterday. I am disheartened to hear how you were treated and I want you to know this is in no way a reflection of how I want my patients treated. Had I been approached, I would have worked to find a place to see you yesterday, if I had known you were here. As docs, we always do our very best to accommodate emergencies – and though sometimes it’s tough to do, most of the time we are able to find a way to make it work.

I know that there is nothing that I can say after the fact to take back the events of yesterday but I want you to know how truly sorry I am that you were treated this way, and I want you to know we will deal with this accordingly as a high priority. Clearly more training is needed at the very least, as you pointed out – and you were far more gracious about it than I would have been if I were in your shoes. Furthermore shingles isn’t even contagious, so clearly our staff needs to be better educated – because you’re right – they represent us – and in this case did a terrible job at it.

Please know that in no way does this represent the mentality of our clinic as a whole – I am embarrassed you were treated this way. We strive every day to be the best we can. I know you may never want to return, but if you do choose to see us again we will do our very best to make it up to you.“ Dr. Erin McLeod

I was running late for an evening appointment due to a traffic accident, and spoke with someone on the phone and was told this would be no problem. When I arrived to the appointment 17 minutes late, I deeply apologized as the situation was out of my control and I was told that I had missed the appointment and would have to reschedule. It would have been great if the person I spoke to on the phone could've told me that if I was to arrive after a certain time, that my appointment would be missed so that myself and the person driving me did not rush and speed to get there once we were out of the traffic area. I had to reschedule the appointment but they could not get me in until next month. Unfortunately I need more contacts before I travel to Europe so waiting a month to have my prescription checked won't work for me and I was forced to make an appointment with another eye doctor who could see me this week.
I understand the importance of being on time, as I am always on time unless situations like this happen that are out of my control. I know that when people are late it can disrupt other appointments and make things difficult, and I am deeply sorry that I caused any trouble by being late. I just wish that it was made clear to me that if I do not arrive to an appointment within a certain period of time that I would miss it. I had been a patient at Bedford Eye Care for around 15 years and I am always on time and am almost always in the waiting room for 10-15 minutes before I see someone anyway. I share because I do not want the same thing to happen to someone else in the future as it was a very frustrating situation I think patients deserve better service than this! A policy should be put in place so patients know that being more than a few minutes late means missing the appointment, I did not see such a policy on the website.

Hello patient1234. First of all, I would like to thank you for letting us know right away about this unfortunate situation. Bedford Eye Care prides itself on exceptional customer service, and your experience certainly did not come close to meeting our service standards. It is totally unacceptable that we indicated that you could still be seen, despite letting us know that you would be late and then being told that you had missed your appointment! To make matters worse, we should have done everything we could to at least get you a supply of contact lenses before your trip to Europe. Fortunately, we have never had a complaint like this in 35+ years of practice, but we will certainly be discussing your experience at our next staff meeting. Mistakes do happen, but we try to use them as learning opportunities so our staff can learn how to avoid situations like this in the future. I can’t ‘undo’ what happened to you, but if you would like to return to our office in the future we would be happy to offer you either a complimentary eye examination or a free 2 week supply of contact lenses. Please call our office at 902-835-2020 and ask for our manager, Cindy. Again, you have our sincere apologies. Dr. Toby Mandelman

I am new to Nova Scotia and didn't know where to start, but so pleased our family ended up here. I have a high prescription, an astigmatism and wore hard contact lenses for 32 years. My eyeglasses have not been enjoyable for many, many years. The last pair felt unusable at times, but really I just gave up ever being truly satisfied with glasses.

Dr. Dobson was great. And then onto the contact fitting. Erin was so patient with me, and although it took a few different lenses, she found the right pair and the soft lenses feel amazing. And I can see beautifully. Never did I feel like I was problematic or rushed.

Erin also helped me with my glass prescription and the fitting (where so many problems can happen). She was so careful. The results are incredible. It might sound dramatic to say "life-changing", but after years of squinting and adjusting and reading with a book 2-3 inches from my eyes, I would use those words.

I find the staff helpful, professional and friendly. My son has broken his glasses 4 or 5 times in 6 months, and each time we come in to get them fixed, we are greeted with a smile.

Been a patient for many years now and have always been more than pleased with the care I receive from Dr. Dobson. More recently though I began wearing contact lenses and with the expert assistance and planning from Erin Hensler the process of adapting to lenses has been seamless.

I am a new patient to Bedford Eye Care and am very happy to have become their new patient!!

I had an issue with my left eye that alarmed me and that I never had before. I was able to get in quite quickly and was very well taken care of right from the start of my phone call with Shalane to my dealing with Kathleen for glasses....very helpful!!

Dr. Mandelman was very caring, thorough, and helped alleviate any concerns I had. She explained everything to me so I could FULLY understand what was happening and made me feel very comfortable the whole time I was there!!

In fact the entire staff was very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful!!

Would highly recommend Bedford Eye Care for exams and anything else you would need for Vision Care.

I have been a patient of Dr. Mandleman for over twenty years. Words can't even explain how grateful I am to her for the care she has given to me over the years. After having terrible difficulties as a result of lazik surgery, she saw me regularly for months to find a solution to the pain and inflammation I suffered from. She was the one to find the abnormalities on my retina and referred me to appropriate specialists. She continues to take a personal interest in my eye health and will see me any time I need her advice and council. She is a fantastic eye doctor and person. All of her staff are friendly, helpful and always make you feel welcome and important. I wouldn't go anywhere else for my eye care. Thank you Bedford Eye Care for all you do!

I decided to visit Bedford Eye Centre. Since my initial visit, it has always been an inviting, clean and friendly. Recieved a extensive exam by Dr. Angela Dobson. Had two surgeries shortly afterwards. A re-check by Dr. Angela Dobson who recommended the SHAW lens. The Optican, Renee, did a fabulous job with my new glasses and sunglasses. All the staff have been consistent with top-notch individual care, respect and knowledge. I would not hesitabe to recommend them to anyone.

We went to Bedford Eye Care seeking a second opinion about glasses for my 11 year old daughter (who has been wearing glasses since she was 11 months old). The glasses she had just been prescribed were not working for her. She had headaches, distortion, the words on a page looked pixelated and were difficult to read. After being dismissed at the first clinic as this being a "case of her not wanting to wear her glasses", I was so pleased that Dr. Mandelman looked straight at her and said "I believe you", and "We are going to figure this out". Dr. Mandelman decided that she was a candidate for Shaw lenses, and now that she is wearing them she is so pleased with the result. Other glasses she had in the past allowed her to see about half as well as these Shaw lenses. Her vision is sharper, her eyes are seeing better together, and she notices many little details of her surroundings that she missed with regular lenses all these years. Alanna, the optician who worked with her, went above and beyond to help her and was very thorough with her measurements to get the perfect fit for the new glasses. We are tremendously pleased with the professionalism of this clinic, and I'm so happy that my daughter's vision is so much better with the Shaw lenses.

I had a great experience at The Bedford Eye Care Centre last week. I had an eye exam performed on me by Dr. Erin Sheppard and she was fantastic. I felt the technology they used to perform the exam was very high-tech and I was impressed by the overall experience. I would defiantly recommend this place to anyone.

I recently had my eye examination at the Bedford Eye Care and was completely satisfied. The care and detailed exams truly impressed me and I have no nagging doubts concerning my eyes. At Bedford Eye Care, the technology is most impressive and in my opinion is the most up to date eye care clinic in the area. The office is most appealing, very bright and from the support staff up to the doctors, the professionalism is outstanding. A great place also to shop for the glasses should you require them - the selection is fantastic. Huge thanks to Dr. Erin Sheppard and Lisa.
