I recently retired from the Canadian Forces and settled in the Halifax region; my son has been seen at your office.
Today, I was diagnosed with shingles and required an eye exam within 24 hours. I presented myself at your office and explained the need for an emergency appointment. I was extremely disappointed with your reception staff. No compassion, understanding or empathy for a person in need. She told me that I could not been seen even though it was an emergency and would not ask a Dr. If an exception could be made.
The biggest disappointed, was how she reacted to my medical issue - following me out of the office while she dis-infected any possible surface I may have touch. She was clearly disgusted to see me in your office. Re-training and education is clearly needed; and those in the front line of medical services need compassion and understanding....I did not experience these traits.
Your front office staff will support or destroy your reputation; i did not get the chance to judge your competences. I was seen by another office and was treated as a human should be....and thankfully, my eye sight has not been compromised.
I am still extremely disappointed; I hope you never experience this medical issue or treatment.

I know that there is nothing that I can say after the fact to take back the events of yesterday but I want you to know how truly sorry I am that you were treated this way, and I want you to know we will deal with this accordingly as a high priority. Clearly more training is needed at the very least, as you pointed out – and you were far more gracious about it than I would have been if I were in your shoes. Furthermore shingles isn’t even contagious, so clearly our staff needs to be better educated – because you’re right – they represent us – and in this case did a terrible job at it.
Please know that in no way does this represent the mentality of our clinic as a whole – I am embarrassed you were treated this way. We strive every day to be the best we can. I understand the importance of being on time, as I am always on time unless situations like this happen that are out of my control. I know that when people are late it can disrupt other appointments and make things difficult, and I am deeply sorry that I caused any trouble by being late. I just wish that it was made clear to me that if I do not arrive to an appointment within a certain period of time that I would miss it. I had been a patient at Bedford Eye Care for around 15 years and I am always on time and am almost always in the waiting room for 10-15 minutes before I see someone anyway. I share because I do not want the same thing to happen to someone else in the future as it was a very frustrating situation I think patients deserve better service than this! A policy should be put in place so patients know that being more than a few minutes late means missing the appointment, I did not see such a policy on the website.
Dr. Dobson was great. And then onto the contact fitting. Erin was so patient with me, and although it took a few different lenses, she found the right pair and the soft lenses feel amazing. And I can see beautifully. Never did I feel like I was problematic or rushed.
Erin also helped me with my glass prescription and the fitting (where so many problems can happen). She was so careful. The results are incredible. It might sound dramatic to say "life-changing", but after years of squinting and adjusting and reading with a book 2-3 inches from my eyes, I would use those words.
I find the staff helpful, professional and friendly. My son has broken his glasses 4 or 5 times in 6 months, and each time we come in to get them fixed, we are greeted with a smile.
I had an issue with my left eye that alarmed me and that I never had before. I was able to get in quite quickly and was very well taken care of right from the start of my phone call with Shalane to my dealing with Kathleen for glasses....very helpful!!
Dr. Mandelman was very caring, thorough, and helped alleviate any concerns I had. She explained everything to me so I could FULLY understand what was happening and made me feel very comfortable the whole time I was there!!
In fact the entire staff was very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful!!
Would highly recommend Bedford Eye Care for exams and anything else you would need for Vision Care.
