Mediocre at best
This spot has the potential to so good. From the outside it always looked cool, had a bit of a retro feel to the place with the booths etc...but after dining there I must say I was very disappointed. The service was fine, quirky and friendly, the food came out in an appropriate amount of time but the quality of the food was lacking. Uninspired & bland, with a lack of fresh ingredients. It’s not like it’s the middle of winter, would it kill them to source out local fresh ingredients that are in season? The beer list was ‘meh’ and could really use a few interesting micro breweries. The wine list I can almost not comment on...you literally could just put on a blindfold and walk in to the nearest lcbo, randomly knocking bottles off the shelves with a pinata stick, triple the price, and there you have it. Maybe I was just expecting to much? I just read about the 2 dollar water on another review, I can’t comment on that as we didn’t order any. For the added price I hope it’s at least filtered. How Bar On Locke has managed to stick around I’m not sure but with any luck bars and restaurants on Locke Street will ‘raise the bar’ forcing places like this to a higher standard.

Great place, great atmosphere.
I'm from outside of Hamilton. A client of mine introduced me to this place. I love it. Good food, very intimate, reasonably priced. Lots of locals. Feels like a little secret. I thought the service was just fine. Quite frankly, I was having a good time talking to my friend, so I can't really say if it was fast or not but it definitely wasn't slow. Like the owners - very personable. I read the reviews below and I think those who are being negative about the place experienced something of an anomoly. We all blow it from time to time but I've been there at least a dozen times and every time has been just swell.

My Favourite Place!
I have say that I am very disappointed with the reviews for this restaurant! It is by far my favourite place to be! The service is always exceptional and personalized (e.g., when my boyfriend proposed to me, they sent complimentary champange to the table and took a picture and sent it to us!)! And the food is delicious and reasonably priced! The Bar on Locke is by far the best restaurant for atmosphere, service and food that I have been too. I encourage others to try this place. If you like an intimate setting, friendly service and a place that remembers your drink order after a long day of work ... this is the place for you!

Tap Water $2.00
My experience was the same as Jennifer's. I was told that a glass of tap water would be $2.00. After talking it over with my friend, we got up and left. We had both been prepared to order lunch with dessert. Perhaps I am the weird one but I have a bad reaction to caffeine...thus no coffee, tea or pop. While I do drink alcohol, I do not drink at lunch time when I have to return to work. Asking for a glass of water seemed like such a small request. Even in Europe you are not charged for water unless it is bottled mineral water I will never return to the Bar on Locke and I've told friends about this experience. Most look at me in disbelief.

My husband and I went for lunch. The waitress told us that we would have to pay for tap water but, we didn't tell us the cost. We were shocked when the bill came and we were charged $2 per person. No other restaruant in Hamilton that I know of charges for tap water. The owner(s) of the restaurant should be disgusted with themselves. Because of the charge for tap water we will never again eat at this restaurant. I'm sure we are not the only people who have choosen to no longer eat there.

Not Pleased
This is probably the worst service I have ever received. The waitresses seemed to be friendly with the regulars, but when I went with my friends, we were brushed off and treated poorly. I think this was also because we were younger than their regular crowd. I couldn't tell you what the food was like. I felt extremely uncomfortable and couldn't wait to get out.

After eating, we saw the waitresses laughing behind the bar at the tip we gave. It was about 10% and they didn't deserve it.

TWO DOLLARS for tap water!!
If I could rate zero stars I would. Two of us visited on Monday Oct 6/08, intending to order lunch during a business day. We chose the table at the front window, although still covered in crumbs from a previous patron, assuming that the server might wipe it down when she brought the menus. Server did approach very promptly, placing both menus over top of the food debris. A tad unsavory but not quite a deal breaker. But wait! We hadn't looked at the menu yet so ordered 2 glasses of water "for now". She then asked if water was to be our "only" beverage, informing us about a $2.00 per person charge for tap water if no other beverage is ordered, because "we are a BAR". We explained that we did intend to order meals, but regardless, tap water is still $2.00 if no other beverage is ordered, no matter how much food you pay for. Unfortunately we cannot review their food, because while she left to get our upscale tap water, we got up and walked out, eventually lunching (with free water) at another establishment down the block.
We are amazed at the unbelievably foolish customer relations, particularly in such a saturated marketplace. Needless to say, we will never return, not even for beer and wine....

Being charged for NOT ordering?
My family went to the Bar for dinner, 3 of 4 ordered wine with their meal and the 4th wanted water only. She was informed that if she did not order a beverage that she would be charged. As full meals along with the wine were being ordered on this busy Monday night, this group of professional women were quite surprised and won't return, even though the restaurant received my rave reviews about their food.
