My review is not based on the food or the service as the food was excellent and the service just OK, we spent a substancial amount at this resturant, 2 bottles of wine in excess of $50 each, cheese plate, 2 starters and 2 meals each, the bill came to over $300, However after looking on their site we saw that they had a prix fixe menu which included entree, meal, and desert, it was $29.00 it also included all the meals we both ordered, I am a little angry to say the least that this was never offered to us, nor to anyone else sitting, there was no mention of it anywhere and no menu's were given, I know you just want to make money Corner House but you are definately going the wrong way about it, if we were offered that menu we still would have bought 2 bottles of wine plus our cheese and hey we would have returned again and again, but not after spending the amount of money we did, I think it's sneaky and I hope someone catches you out one day.

I visited during the week.........
I also emailed them and asked, I just got back the reply and I am SHOCKED to say the least, do you think my email is rude? I agree my response for the second time was rude but isn't it a pretty straight forward question? I thought it was

My 1st email
When is your Prix Fixe Menu ($29) available? Do you have to ask for this menu specifically? We came for dinner on Tuesday night and spent a substantial amount, after looking on your webpage I see you have this menu available but nothing was ever offered to us of that kind. I find this very surprising for a restaurant like yours but then again am not surprised as it would be a big money making scheme, to be quite honest we are very disappointed this was never offered and will be writing a review regarding this. Although the meal was lovely, I don’t agree with advertising it and not mentioning it at all.

Thanks

If you would like a reply personally, please send us your telephone # and we will gladly explain.

Thank you for your email..

My 2nd email
Hi Michelle,

All I wanted was an answer to the question, is the prix fixe menu available or not? Thought it was quite straight forward. I don’t have time to talk at work so wanted a simple answer over email. Not to worry just justifies our decision even more to never come back.

Thanks

The corner house response
Many customers have taken advantage of our $29 pre-fix. They ask, they receive. Its on our website only, not advertised anywhere as such. Its for the customer to see, and request.

Simple as that.

Being rude wont get you anywhere.. !

You could have handled yourself quite differently...but that’s fine.....

when you have this attitude, we do not need you back in our restaurant...but thanks anyways.

I really didnt expect a reply....how old is she? do you really think she wants me to have a wonderful day? haha... I sure as hell don't. I told her straight out the food was lovely, maybe doesnt understand english? who know's....

My email back to what I considered rude....then the war was on!!!!

Excuse me? I requested something, I am a customer, I asked nicely the first time and you could not even reply with an answer again to a paying customer! We never want to return trust me, again I hope my reviews are going to now dis-courage people away because I will now copy in your reply answer, maybe next time just give an answer, ever heard the saying “the customer is always right” Your making your living of people like us……..so maybe you shouldn’t be so rude. Your restaurant is a hoax and rip-off and I hope people notice that.
And doesn’t this show a lovely side of u...for people to see as well.

I did reply right away....I did ask for your telephone number to handle this properly and professionally. When you try to threaten any restaurant, it doesn’t work and why would they welcome you back??? I have never had anyone in ten years with this attitude. It is at your request to ask for the pre-fix.. We are the most reasonably priced menu in Toronto for the quality and portions. You even told me that in your first email how much you enjoyed the food.

You could have just suggested that next time you come in , you look forward to the $29 menu and gave a suggestion....U started rudeness, not me.

And lastly....the customer IS always right until they r rude and every restaurant owner in Toronto stands by that!!!!

You oviously have too much time on your hands...and this is my last reply.

Sorry you are so bitter about trivial stuff and you couldn’t just come in and enjoy the pre-fix like so many other customers have requested.

If we would have chatted live and you would have sent your number, like most people would have, if they wanted a reply...all this stupidity woudnt go back and forth.

Have a wonderful day...

When did you visit the restaurant? The pre fixe is only offered Tuesday to Friday 5:30 p.m. - 10:00p.m. for dinner only, and on Fridays only the $35 menu is available. If you visited outside of this time it is understandable, however they should have this special menu visible. Maybe give them a call and let them know that it wasn't offered if you were in the hours its offered.

I loved everything about this quaint restaurant. Very unique to be seated in one of the rooms of a converted house. It made for an intimate setting. Our server was very friendly and not pretentious, which you often find in pricier restaurants. Even though it was summerlicious and the restaurant quite full, the hostess (co-owner) was kind enough to find us a nice table. She is also a singer but put her career on hold to help her husband start the restaurant. Love the personal touch!

All of the food was DELICIOUS. I started with mushroom/gruyere tart-could have been warmer but very tasty. The steak was done perfectly and so delicious. To end an already great meal was the cherry and white chocolate bread pudding with rum sauce - to die for.

My only complaint would be that the portions were on the small side. This may be because it was the Summerlicious menu. I will definitely return and highly recommend this place.

Be warned, this place charges you $2 for "hot h2O service" - which they do not mention and it just shows up on your bill, and also $3 to split an appetizer. We ordered the menu's most expensive mains plus with dessert the extra $7 they charged on the bill was just spare change, but it's the principle of it, and the audacity to charge for something that is normally considered part of regular restaurant service. The food was good, and I have been to CH before, but this was the first time at Corner House where we did not order wine, perhaps in their eyes, we were just "cheap" patrons. I think if they need to make that $7 so badly, they should just raise the prices on the menu and I would have happily paid for it. We tip them as normal, and bid this restaurant adieu. I will not be returning. Next time, they may charge for the fresh pepper or parmesan cheese.

We see this happening more and more. In restaurants. Wireless services. Everywhere. The practice of hidden charges, in the vein of incremental revenue), really is getting out of hand. The government needs to step in and do something about it. If it doesn't appear anywhere on a pricelist, it can't be charged. Period.

They charged you an extra 2$ for hot water? you've got to be kidding me! and 3$ to share? Are they mad? I find that so rude!!!

See my profile (nealan49.n49.ca) for my restaurant pet peeves. Sharing charge and charging for condiments are on the list. Like you said, I'll gladly pay whatever the cost is for an entree, but I don't want to get dinged for things that should be included. What is Hot H2O service anyway?

oh i am upset just reading about it .. how low do they have to sink and for an upscale place! what a great job from the management in discouraging people to come back again (what is this called the anti customer satisfaction strategy?).

I'm very glad I read this review!! This is one place I definitely won't visit on my next visit to TO. This just soundz like 'highway robbery' to me!
It's too bad more people don't know about this becuz if enuf people boycotted them, they'd be getting rid of the extra hidden charges Pronto!
