Its true, there are more than a few engines that make great swap candidates for the Miata. We settled on the Ecotec engine for a few key reasons. They are plentiful, and because of that, they are inexpensive. They are reliable, many in service have 200,000+ miles on them and still run as new. Used engines from the salvage yards are a drop in 200hp option, while fully built engines are capable of 1500+hp, or anything in between. When comparing a stock BP engine with a M62 supercharger, or entry level turbo system to a stock LE5 you quickly notice the Ecotec makes as much torque as the turbo BP, but with no lag, and still manages 200hp at peak with the linear powerband of the supercharged BP.
