How Scotia helped me achieve my Academic and Personal Goals
This past summer I had the amazing opportunity to work with Scotia Personnel Ltd. I had a the esteemed opportunity to work with a representative that took ample time to coach and mentor me through the entire transition process. This summer I went to Calabasas to work at Salvation Army camp to work as a Program Team member.Through the entire experience I learnt that turning values into goals is of utmost importance to staying true to who you are and to being self-accomplished as a leader. As a leader in the Early Childhood Field, I strive to create moments that allow people to feel that they are better off after they have interacted with me. As a leader in the Early Childhood field it is very important that I recognize the leadership of others. As an Early Childhood leader it is my responsibility to empower children to reach their highest potential by channeling their hidden talents. Part of my philosophy of Early Childhood Education recognizes that children are capable beings and they are more than competent to make conscious decision about their wellbeing. During this opportunity, I was able to see parts of my philosophy in practice, interacting with school-age children allowed me to see that children are more capable than we believe. The ability to be impactful and empower young children to trust their competences is one of the leadership competences that I acquired through the two-month internship. My Camp staff were definitely trailblazers as it relates to inter-professional practices. One very important part of their strategic direction is-to develop partnership and strong relationships with various community partners, with an effort to maximize services for students and families. My agency partners with a variety of community based social service groups such as; local foster care agencies, through this agency they are able to provide Families with services such as-family yoga, meditation, knitting circles, peer counselling and also mental health first aid for parents with children who have varied mental health illnesses. My agency follows under the mission of The Salvation Army and therefore partners with these agencies to provide parents and children with spiritual growth. My agency also partners with the city of Calabasas, California by allowing their staff members to sit on various advisory committees such as the Youth Advisory Council, Child Care Advisory Group and The Salvation Army Divisional District. I have had the privilege to become a member of the Program Team at the Salvation Army Mount Crags/Gilmore camp, this group provides information, advice and recommendations to Divisional Leaders through the Community and Protective Service Committee on issues affecting child care of children from 5 years up to 16 years. Some of these issues include but are not limited to, special needs funding, resource centers funding, wage subsidy, childcare fee subsidy and health and safety issues related to playgrounds.I left California with lifelong friendships, I feel like my mentorship definitely continued, I invited a few to home in Canada and they were able to spend a few days at my house. I left so honored to be the leader for a group of driven and highly talented group of individuals. I was happy that I got over my imposter syndrome and was able to open up to me staff and also have that reciprocated. I am forever in-debt to Scotia Personnel for afforded me this rewarding and life-changing opportunity!

Thank You Scotia

Two Months in Verona, Italy
Teaching English in Verona, Italy was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. Working with Scotia Personnel to further this experience was an incredible journey. The staff at Scotia Personnel are very easy to talk too and incredibly friendly. At first, I thought travelling and Nannying would be a cool experience but I never thought in my wildest dreams that it would come true, would be as seamless and easy as it was and that I would get to live in Italy with such an amazing family that I now call my Italian family. Going to Italy to live for two months was very scary…I didn’t speak the language, I didn’t know anyone and I was away from home in a different country for two months. To say the least this trip was life changing.

I arrived at the airport in Verona and my family was waiting for me with flowers. They were so excited to meet me and I felt the same. The language barrier was hard at first because I wanted to say so much to them and they wanted to say so much to me… thank you google translate haha!! I remember the little girl when I first met her had the biggest smile on her face and she kept hugging me and holding my hand. I immediately made a sister. She grew up with two older brothers so she was pretty excited to have an older sister. We did everything together. She especially loved it when I styled her hair.

Every person in their family opened me into their family with open arms. I went to a family party with about sixty extended family members attending. I was nervous because their English wasn’t great and I had to socialize with all these new people for the afternoon. Everyone was so excited to meet the “Canadian” girl. I was welcomed in by so many and it made me feel like family. The family offered me many things such as the option to travel, go out and explore, meet new people, have evenings out, taste new foods and see a new part of the world. The family was so excited to show me around Italy. We went to Venice for the day and got to see the canals and do a gondola ride. We also got to see a city that is all built on water which was unique.

Feeling nervous and anxious is normal and it just means you’re going outside of your comfort zone. I truly believe to have the greatest experiences of your life – you need to be outside of your comfort zone. This trip made me go out of my comfort zone because everything was a new experience in a new culture, which is why I truly believe this was the most amazing experience I have ever had. I have some new family members and a forever connection to Verona, Italy.

Au Pair in Spain / Camp Coach in the UK
I have worked with Scotia Personnel twice and have had a phenomenal experience both times. In 2016, I went to Palma Mallorca Spain as an Au Pair. They set me up with a wonderful family. My days would consist of waking up the 3 boys in the family, making them breakfast, taking them to the beach and then coming back to the house for lunch. During my weekends off, I would stay with the family because they would show me around the island. I still keep in contact with the family. In 2018, I went to England to work at a camp. The process of being able to work at the camp as a Canadian citizen would seem difficult but Scotia Personnel knew what needed to be done, how to do it , and when. They guided me throughout the entire process. I had the time of my life at the camp. On a day to day basis, my roommates and I would wake up and get breakfast. Each week we were given a group of kids. We would take them to activities throughout the day, eat lunch with them, and supervise them during evening activities. On off weekends I would go to London or just hangout with friends. At the begging of the camp I requested a week off in August. During that week I visited the family that I Au Paired for in Spain. I still keep in contact with the girls that I met at the camp. We always talk about how it was the best summer ever.

Au Pair
Au pairing for Scotia Personnel is the best experiences I have ever had, it has one hundred percent changed my life in the best way. I was an au pair in America and in China, they were both completely different experiences and it taught be so much about travelling, children, culture and it even taught be things about myself that I didn't know.

Being in the United States was a great experience, I lived in Michigan and was an au pair. You create a bond with the children and being with them 45 hours a week your really connecting with them, I would take the boys to the park, do crafts with them, bake with them, and play lots of fun games. In the USA you're introduced to friends right away, and the friendship that you create with these other girls is on tha you will have forever, one of my best friends lives in Germany and we met in Michigan and we still talk everyday.

In China I was an english tutor, I would be with my little girl Pudding 25 hours a week, we would study english, play games, bake, play outside, and much more. In China you take mandarin classes two days a week which is also a great way to meet other au pairs, and there is activities once of twice a month where all the au pairs in your district get together. When I got to China I landed in Shanghai and then drove to Hangzhou, which is were orientation was, and explored and met new friends and it was just a great first couple days in China. When I was in China I got to travel to an island called Sanya with my host family, it was one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. When people talk about going to China they always say ‘what about the food?’ the food was amazing, since I have returned back to Canada I have been craving real chinese food. For me China was amazing and I would go back in a heartbeat, my host parents were so caring and so loving, when I had to say bye to my hostchild it was so hard cause I was so close with her, I still talk to my host family often.

Traveling and working with children was one of the best things I have ever done. I was planning on going to university for Marine Biology, once I got home from these trips I realized that I wanted to teach elementary school in a different country. In September I am going to school for Early Childhood Education, and after school I hope to get a job teaching in at a Kindergarten in China.

England
I went to London, England as an Au Pair only planning on staying 6 months. I loved it so much that I ended up staying the duration of my visa which was two years. Scotia Personnel was absolutely amazing from beginning to end. They coached me through the process of getting to the UK which was what I needed to take the leap. When my first host family had to move 9 months after my arrival, Scotia Personnel was there to help set me up with another equally amazing family. They are extremely pleasant to work with and you can tell that they really care about you. I highly recommend!

Great Opportunities and Experiences
Reaching out to ScotiaPersonnel has been a great experience. I reached out to them to find a childcare position and they placed me with an amazing family who I now consider great friends. Even on days I was not nannying, they always found me employment in daycares, and they always have great opportunities. It has been a wonderful experience and I definitely will keep working with them for employment and future opportunities.

Gabby's Review (:
Hello! My name is Gabriella and I am an international student studying in Halifax, Canada. I am originally from Trinidad but I grew up on a small Caribbean island called Antigua. You can imagine the drastic change from warm, tropical, island to cold, windy city. Thankfully, Scotia Personnel was there to help me with my transition. Scotia Personnel really connected me to the Haligonian community by providing me with work opportunities in my favorite field; child care! Richelle, the director at Scotia, placed me as a nanny in a lovely home that housed the sweetest little girl. I got to know her very well, and I grew to look forward to our adventure filled afternoons together (adventure meaning anything from racing toy cars to taking the bus to the library).
After working at an in-home environment, I was ready to experience a day care setting. Scotia Personnel helped me find jobs at different day cares around Halifax where I was able to meet many little faces and experience all of their big personalities. Working in day cares has taught me how to be a more loving and patient care-taker as well as communicate more effectively with young children.
I would definitely recommend that anyone, especially international students take advantage of the opportunities offered by Scotia.

Life changing experience
October 31st, 2016 is a day where my life changed. I was in my second year of the Social Service Worker Program in an 8 am class. I really thought I was going to skip school that day. I was not in the mood to be in class because I simply couldn’t figure out where my life was headed. However, I still went to class. To this day I am so grateful I did. Had I not been in this class, I never would have had one of the most amazing experiences in my life. That day I remember is the day where Scotia Personnel Ltd. came into our classroom and told us about the opportunities of working abroad. I gave them my form with number and the rest is history. Not even a year later, I was beginning a new journey to be an Au Pair in the United States. Had it not been for Scotia Personnel and all their hard work getting everything ready for hiring and preparation for this incredible adventure I would have never been able to accomplish this on my own. They made sure I was in a secure program with loads of guidance and support through the transition to be in a new country. If you want to this amazing opportunity the people at Scotia Personnel Ltd. will not stop until you are on the plane bags packed and on your way to your new adventure. My year in the United States was the best experience in my life and had not been for that in Presentation in that 8 am class on October 31st,2016, I never would have this experience of a lifetime.

Thank You Scotia Personnel,

-Janelle Perras

Teaching English in South Korea
In May 2017 I lived and worked in South Korea teaching English for 1 year through the guidance and help of Scotia Personnel LTD. From the very beginning of the application process in Canada to arriving home from Korea, Scotia Personnel was there to help me along the way and support my journey, always curious for updates and to see how I was doing. My experiences in Korea were life changing and I am grateful to Scotia Personnel for supporting me in reaching my goals. I definitely recommend this company if you have the desire to work and live abroad!

Unforgettable Experiences!
I have experienced living and working in Italy and China through Scotia Personnel Ltd. It is difficult to put into words everything I have experienced working abroad, but I am truly grateful to have come across this agency.

My first experience was in Italy. I completed a 3-month placement the summer of 2017. Scotia Personnel connected me with two families and luckily, I chose one after having a video call interview. I then hopped on a plane to go live with my new Italian family. Spending everyday communicating in English with my two-host kids and assisting them with English assignments proved to be challenging, yet very rewarding. I was given the opportunity to travel around Italy with my host family as well as on my own. It is truly an experience I will never forget, as Italy was always a dream of mine to visit. Through this agency I was able to live just as the Italians do and I cannot thank them enough for it.

My second experience was in China. I completed a 6-week summer placement in 2018. I wasn’t sure what to expect with this placement and I chose to head into it with no expectations. I had one host kid who spoke intermediate English. This program was a lot more challenging in comparison with last summer as I had to create my own lesson plans for my host kid. Luckily, I had the support of a TESOL instructor in China who provided teaching material and ideas. You hear stories about China, but they are nothing like experiencing the real thing. I fell in love with China and cannot wait to return. It is a country filled with beautiful skyscrapers and rich culture, it is a must visit.

Richelle has been exceptional! She has always answered my questions and ensured that I arrived in both countries safely. I cannot thank this agency enough for I have experienced so much more than I ever thought I would. I will continue to speak well of Scotia Personnel Ltd, because without them I would have never met my Italian and Chinese families!

Tutor in English in Italy
Hey my name is Shae-Lynn Way and I was so lucky to have had the opportunity to travel to Italy this summer and tutor children in English. I set off on June 19th and flew to Milan where I was greeted by two wonderful 8 year old girls and their families! Alicia and Chiara are best friends and I worked closely with both their families. With Alicia I travelled to Varenna, which is a small, quaint town on Lake Como, just on the southern side of the Alps! Varenna was definitely my favourite part of the trip. The views were absolutely breath taking and the overall culture of the town was very unique. I then travelled with Alicia, Chiara and their families to Livigno. Livigno is located right in the Alps, so the drive there was absolutely beautiful! Livigno is known for their ski slopes and trails so it was a wonderful place to get out and explore!
During the day I would work with the girls for one hour on English homework. I would assist them on different activities in their work books and helped them if they had any questions. Throughout the day we would play and go on different excursions with their mothers. There was always something different and new everyday. This was a perfect time for me to communicate in English with the girls and have conversations out in the real world opposed to their work books. It wasn’t always easy, because of the language barrier but we managed to made it work and it was great stimulation for the girls English skills.
On July 12th I unfortunately had to cut my trip short due to a sudden death in my family back home. On July 20th I was supposed to travel to Trento, Italy to stay for another month with a twelve year old boy named Luca who I would also tutor in English and travel with him and his family to the Dolomite Mountains. I was heartbroken to leave Italy and I am still so sad I never got the chance to meet Luca and his family! But I had such an amazing time while I was there and learned a lot . I gained so much valuable experience and was able to explore at the same time. It was definitely a trip of a lifetime and I can’t wait to go back and finish the rest of my trip next year!

Life changing experience
I left Canada for Oxford, United Kingdom in September 2014 right after graduating from the Hospitality Management – Hotel and Restaurant program from Algonquin College.I moved to England in 2014 for a one-year contract with a hotel as a Food and Beverage Assistant and ended up staying 2.5 more years because I loved it so much.
I was able to travel to 15+ countries in Europe while working in England. Every month I would travel somewhere different and was able to submerse myself into the cultures. Being able to take a 2-hour flight in any direction and land somewhere beautiful in Europe is incredible.
After one year of being in England I met a European man named Lorenzo. Had I not moved overseas with Scotia Personnel I would have never met my now husband and my incredible life long friends. Who doesn’t want to meet people from all over the world and be able to travel with them? Why wouldn’t you want to meet someone who could potentially be your husband or wife?
I eventually left the hotel and city I was placed in and moved to another hotel with the same company in Surrey where I worked for a year as Front of House Manager and again met more friends, travelled more and took in the culture. After I left this hotel I moved to Austria, where I ran a ski chalet for the winter season.
If you asked me on the flight to England in September 2014 if I would end up staying a total of 3 years and working not only in England but also in Austria I would have told you “No way, my life isn’t that cool” and when I was finally on the plane back to Canada after an incredible 3 years, I was able to sit back as a newly married women with my husband beside me and just smile and think how cool my life was and how it was all made possible through Scotia Personnel.
I could talk for days about my experience with Scotia Personnel but I think the best way to describe it would be; the most life changing, epic, adventurous experience I have ever had in my life. An experience where I was able to make life long friends and a life long partner and I cannot thank Scotia Personnel & Marilyn enough.

Amazing Opportunity!!!!
My experience with Scotia Personnel has been truly amazing. I was given the opportunity in October of 2015 to move to The Netherlands for one year and work as a Junior Nanny. That year I was able to travel all over Europe, including places like Greece, Italy, France and Ireland. Little did I know that this was only the beginning of my Au Pair/Nanny experience. About eight months after moving back home from The Netherlands, I was given another opportunity to be a nanny in Montreal, Quebec. This was only a summer position as I already had set up moving to Seattle, Washington in October. While being in Montreal, I was able to explore all that beautiful Montreal has to offer. I also would quite frequently travel with the family to Quebec City to visit their family members. The family was so welcoming and really treated me as part of their family. After four months of being in Montreal, I sadly had to say goodbye and start my new exciting adventure in Seattle. I arrived in Seattle in October of 2017. Through the period of eight months that I was there, I gained forever lasting friendships and a whole new outlook on life. I was able to travel to Arizona, Idaho, Vancouver, Victoria and Las Vegas. My host family in Seattle was absolutely amazing. I would stay there forever if I could. I still talk to the family daily and Skype with them whenever possible.
With all being said, I highly recommend Scotia Personnel to anyone and everyone. I have had such a positive travel experience that it rubbed off on some of my friends and had a friend work with them to move to Australia and currently I have a friend living in Italy. Although I am back home now, I know my journey is not over. I am looking forward to my future as I know I will receive more opportunities to work abroad and explore more of this beautiful world we get to live in.

Amazing year in China! Thank you, Scotia Personnel!
My time going abroad has been truly developmental. From the experience of another country to the friends I've from around the world, this has been easily one of the most formative adventures someone could take. Learning a language while immersed in the culture allows development in such a natural and involved way; with a child to assist and grow with only cements your abilities. In fact, having a whole family to help you through your experience is a huge benefit! Not only will you develop connections and relationships with your hosts, your fellow au pairs are always there for you. With such a diverse cast of people, you'll definitely find your fit. And the au pair companies are always there to help. There's no way I'll ever forget or regret my time here, and neither will you.

amazing au pair experience
I have been an au pair twice with Scotia Personnel (in the Netherlands and currently in Australia). All of the staff at Scotia Personnel have been very supportive and knowledgeable throughout both of my journeys as an au pair from start to finish. To anyone looking to take a gap year or looking for a break from everyday life I highly suggest you contact Scotia to hear all about the many programs they have, I’m so happy that I did.

Au Pair experience
With Scotia Personnel, I was able to spend a year in the United States with Au Pair in America back in 2004/2005. I was placed with an amazing family with 2 boys and that I am still in contact with. Fortunately during my year I had lots of time off, so was able to travel all around the United States!

I am grateful to have had this opportunity, Thank you Scotia Personnel!

Amazing
I came across Scotia Personnel’s information on my university’s (Memorial University of Newfoundland) and couldn’t decide between Au Pairing or the Summer Camps. Both Richelle and Marilyn helped me decide what would be best for me and I decided on Au Pairing in Italy.
A friend from University was interested in the program as well and after we spoke to Richelle and Marilyn they worked extra hard to place us with the same family! They made what could have been a terrifying, complicated experience into something easy and amazing. They allowed me to have the summer of a lifetime travelling around Italy (and visiting a few other countries). I’ll be back in Europe for school in the fall and I’m making a point to go back to Milan to see the family I was placed with – Scotia Personnel gave me the opportunity to meet new people who became my family and travel – two things I love most in the world.
The whole team at Scotia Personnel were available if anything at all was needed, from the original contact to when I got back to Newfoundland. If I didn’t have to do courses this summer I’d be Au Pairing with them again – maybe in America this time to experience something new. I already have plans to do their China program in a year’s time when I finish University.
I cannot thank them enough for everything they did for me – I’d recommend the company and their programs to anyone.
