After graduating at the top of his class from medical school in Kansas City, he specialized in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. During those six years in Dallas, he was trained in the treatment of ear, nose, and throat disorders in children, balance and hearing problems, sinus and allergy conditions, snoring and sleep apnea, and surgery of the head and neck. He became board-certified in 2001.
