I had a similar situation to below, I purchased my wedding gown from Garber's, unfortunately the wedding was called off. The dress was around $2200 and I have paid $1500. I asked if I could get a refund and just lose the $100 deposit as I know my dress will sell quickly, it hasn't had any alterations and it is brand new and I was told NO. I to was told to try and sell on Kijiji or go to Toronto but no one wants to spend that kind of money on kijiji. They will now have received my $1500 plus they will turn around and sell my dress for $2200 and make almost double for this one dress. My options were the same as below, lose out on what I have paid and go home with no dress or pay the remaining $700 and have a dress I will never wear. It just seems so sad that this company isn't willing to refund customers when they are in a very sad situation. Its not often that a brides wedding is called off for them to have to do this often to say if they do for one customer they will have to do for all. Every company can alter their policies and make exceptions, I could understand if we have altered the dress in any way that they could not resell it, but when they are brand new, still in the package...C'mon! I think this company is just greedy. I will never recommend this company to anyone. Word of mouth does wonders!
My future son in law cancelled the wedding in December for a wedding that was to take place in Feb 2012.
I layed away my daughter's dress, paid $100.00 down payment and continued to mail $100.00 cheques to Garber's mthly trying to pay down what I owed at due date. Today 3 April 2012 I visited the London store on Dundas St as it was time to pay the account in full. Since paying $800.00 on the account and $100.00 downpayment I had two choices I was given by Nina the manager.
1)I had to either pay the outstanding $217.oo I owe on the account and take the dress, tiara and bustier, what am I going to do with a wedding dress for which the wedding was cancelled!
2)My other option was to forgo my down payment of $100.00 , lose the $800.00 I have paid to them and forfeit the dress, tiara and bustier because I did not pay the $217.00 to pay the account in full.
I asked Nina whether I could receive a store credit for the amount of money that was given to Garbers, the response was NO.
I would be agreeable if they were to charge me for storage with having the dress on the lay away plan and not taking it in the end.
I checked the Better Business Bureau web site today for Garber's business score to find they are not Better Business Accredited and have had 5 complaints registered against them.
Garber's store policy is too rigid and needs to be more flexible when it comes to individuals misfortunes.
I was told "If they altered their policy for me they would have to alter their policy for others" and "would no longer be in the bridal business if they were to do that". Buyer beware!
I am 100% certain when I left the store today the dress was back on the rack for resale, the store makes another $1200.00 (tax incl) because of my daughter's misfortune. It has been an emotional rollercoaster for all involved. It is not as if the dress was a special order, the dress was chosen from a rack of dresses and was not altered in any way.
Nina the manager suggested that I try to sell the dress and accessories at a consignment shop in Toronto, with the cost of gas and accomodations for the night and hoping the dress would sell would likely not be possible with the number of consignments shops in the Toronto area. She offered to give me a mth to decide on my decision as to what I wanted to do, I tried to sell the dress on Kijji, have you visited various web sites and seen how many dresses there are out there, scads! When I listed the dress and accessories on Kiiji for sale, no calls nor bites after posting the ad for over 6 weeks.
If Nina was willing to offer me a store credit I would have been more than happy, I would have spread the word that they are a great business to deal with, now I will make certain that everyone I speak to will know this story......
Garber's needs to look at their policy and be somewhat flexible instead of having everything carved in stone. This is nothing but a greed, greed situation and a win win for them!
I know Nina is not to blame it is Garber's and their policy, what a way to do business!!!!
