Starting in 2000, GM launched a new globally designed 4 cylinder engine under the moniker Ecotec. This engine first saw use in the new Saturn L series, and from 2002 onwards, it was the standard issue GM 4 cylinder engine. Engines range from 2.0L to 2.4L, and feature turbocharging, supercharging, and/or variable valve timing. The most common versions in North America are the L61 2.2L, and LE5 2.4L engine. L61, LE5, and others such as LSJ and LNF refer to the GM engine code. This is much the same as B6, BP, etc for Mazda.
