Wonderful & Affordable
I have been going here for over 15 and every stylist I have dealt with has been great. They won't let anyone be a part of the hairstylist team at the co-op unless they have been cutting and/or colouring hair for at least 10 years. Outside of 3 other salons in town, all now closed, this is the only place in Ottawa where I have had consistently great cuts and where the hairdressers LISTENED to me and helped me pick styles that suit me. The prices are great as well. How can you go wrong for $80 for a cut and colour? I highly recommend Donka and well as Peggy and Eli for hair - and also their esthetician, Lillian who has a small studio at the back. Lilian does threading, although she also does waxing. Don't let the one bad review on here fool you - these people are great! They are honest about what will work and what won't work, on your face with your hair type - and they will tell you why... they refuse to give you a haircut that will look bad on you. They are also friendly and make clients feel at home.

Peggy is excelent!
I have been getting my hair cut with Peggy for more than three years and I am always happy. I recently got married and she did my hair. I got lots of compliments on my hair and I was very pleased with the results. The best of of it is the affordable prices.

Great hair cut and colour, reasonable price
I got my hair cut and coloured with Tara and loved the cut an colour! I got so many compliments from friend one of my friends said it was, "the best my hair had ever looked!" Tara was easy to chat with and is obviously passionate about what she does. I will be going back for sure and would highly recommend Tara to anyone!

Don't Judge the Salon by the Stylist
Half the reviews on here are negative, but every single one fails to understand it's a co-op. That means there are independent stylists here, and each of them has their own skills or lack thereof.

I had a frizzy mess of curly hair that hadn't been cut for four years after my parents took me to a men's hairstylist who gave me a box cut (which turned into a square afro.) Caroline Haddad took my hair, washed it, and cut it wet.

Although I've heard plenty of people advising against cutting curly hair wet, she made it work. She has very similar hair to mine so I can see why it came out as well as it did. I was happy with my haircut and I am planning to go back soon.

Peggy is amazing
I go see Peggy every 4-6 months for cuts and highlights. She is wonderful, and the price is amazing, and she has wonderful expertise. She looked closely at my hair, and suggested that the cut i wanted was not compatible with the way my hair fell and its thickness. She suggested an alternative cut that was similar (I wanted a bob, she suggested more layers and thinning it out more). I left with a great cut that looked good as it grew out!

If you are considering going to the hair co-op, make an appointment with Peggy!

So Lucky to Have Found Peggy
I have an event or 2 each year in Ottawa and rely on Peggy heavily to give me interesting beautiful updos. Not only is Peggy reliable and flexible, she is most importantly, creative. For special occasions, go see her if you want a true professional! I`ve never been disappointed.

It's about the STYLIST, not the SALON
I am sorry for those of you who have had a bad experience at the Hair Co-Op, but here are some facts which may help others in their search for a good stylist.

The Hair Co-Op is just that - a Co-Op. Stylists rent a chair and each is, in effect, their own micro-business within the shared, cooperative space. What this means is that a bad stylist condemns their own work, not that of the entire salon space, so choose your stylist wisely and carefully.

I have been going to the Hair Co-Op for years, and enjoying the stylist services of Caroline Haddad. Caroline is professional, approachable, warm and a great stylist! Caroline colours, cuts and styles my hair, and I am always VERY happy with how I look; I am also happy with the price, which is always reasonable. I have referred friends who always come away happy. I have also enjoyed the services of her colleague Joe, who does fabulous work - he is also very professional and skilled.

So, don't slam the Co-Op, just do your homework and be selective!

I have only ever had great experiences at Hair Co-op. I have been going there for a while but recently I tried out another spot that was closer to my place and they completely messed up my hair. So I went into Hair Co-op and got Amanada to fix my hair and it looked amazing. She was so sweet and took her time to make sure I was completely happy with my cut and colour. I am really impressed with their service.

Tracy help selected the perfect hair colour that complemented my skin tones, cut my blow dried my hair and when I left her chair I felt great!

Thank you Tracy I will be back and often.

experience makes the difference
I just moved to Ottawa, and I didn't know where to go for a haircut, and colour, there are so many places in downtown, I moved here to look for a better job, so that been said, I was looking for a place where I could get a good job done to my hair, without paying an arm and a leg,the beauty of this salon is that you don't have to make an appointment like other places, a couple of people that I met, recomended me to go to the Hair Co-op. So I went,I ask to get a colour done, they took me right away, The Hairstylist that I got, was very pleasant and completely professional, before she put the colour on my hair, she ask me all this type of questions about my hair, since it was the first time I've been there, after me being completely honest with my answers about my hair, she decided that, what she had to do was, what's called a "Corrective Colour" I had no idea that my hair needed to be corrected, because of some idiot, over bleched out my hair before, so after three hours of correcting my haircolour, I only had to pay under $200 for the beautiful job, that the hairstylist was capable of achieve, on my hair. So ladies, I'm sure there's a couple of hairstylist there that, are not as experienced, but I have to say, that I was completely satified, with the job.

owsome Hairstylists
The Hair Co-op, its problably the only Hair salon in where each and every hairstylist is totally independent, it also means, that each one of them is fully responsable, professional, and experienced. I've been comming to the Hair Co-op for more then 20 years, and never been unsatisfied, you can make an appointment with any of the stylist, or you can just walk-in and yet be sure that you will be well taking care off. What's more wonderful is that they are very affordable, dou to the fact that each one of them is totally independent.

I was devastated after going to the Hair Co-op. I'm new to downtown and went to the closest salon, expecting a descent outcome. Emma, the stylist who ruined my hair, not only charged me a high price to get my hair done, but refused to do anything once I expressed that I was extremely unsatisfied.
I asked for blonde highlights (my hair already light), and I specified I wanted a natural look. She suggested doing low lights also, which I agreed to so long as it looked natural. When she was finished, she began blow-drying my hair and all I saw was bleach blonde and blackish brown streaks. I was nearly in tears. She was doing such a horrible job of styling my hair I told her to stop blow drying my hair and that I would go home to finish it. I thought maybe it only looked bad because of the way she was drying it. So I went home, finished drying my hair and cried. It was the trashiest hair style I had seen. I immediately called another salon to have them redo my hair. The hairstylist I ended up going to was disgusted with her work. He took pictures of the streaks which also showed large blotches amongst the highlights. He explained that whoever did my hair was very inexperienced and lazy. He encouraged me to go back to the salon, bring the pictures, and ask for reimbursement as Emma should never have accepted payment for her work. So I called Emma at The Hair Coop, and she refused. I asked to speak to the owner, at which point Emma agreed to pay me back. We arranged a date and time I would go her salon to pick up reimbursement. When I got there on that day and time (I even had to leave work early to do this), Emma had already left and left nothing for me to pick up. The owner gave me her number so I called her and she once again refused to pay me back.

This was by far the most unprofessional experience I have ever had. I think Emma is not only completely unqualified, but also provided terrible customer service. Do not waste your money or time at the Hair Co-op.
