Schooner is the best storage unit I have used. Very secure facility. Pest controlled as well. Insurance for your units. You name it they have it! Code access for front gate and building doors. Own lock or purchaseable lock. Thank you schooner.
Louise has great interpersonal skills. Helped me with the new system the facility is using. Had some issues with my lock and she was able to fast track solutions for me. A great addition to the team
I've had many different units here over the last 20 years. The staff I've dealt with has always been great. The facility is clean and well-lit, with easy access to the units. They're my "go to" for storage!
All the recent 5 star reviews are from employees of the company. They leave the gate open most nights, (when it’s supposed to close and lock at 11pm). They also increased the rates, (a 70$ unit is now 100$). They now require insurance, fired the site cleaner, and are charging every 4 weeks, instead of once a month. This results in 13 payments through the year, rather than 12. This facility is no longer secure, and is under new ownership. The new owners were very rude to the old staff, resulting in all of them leaving. Please please please literally go anywhere else!!
Schooner Self Storage is in a super convenient location. The site feels safe, it's very clean and well looked after with great pricing. The team was helpful and straightforward to deal with, which made the whole experience hassle-free. Great option if you need storage in the Waterloo or Kitchener region.
Years ago Schooner storage used to be a great place with friendly and efficient customer service. However, somewhere along the way this changed. Perhaps new management? Who knows. But it’s now incompetent, and unfriendly. For example, I called today to inquire about the price for renting a unit. I was given an uncompetitive price by “the manager” (for the real senior management, this happened on Dec. 02). When I politely pointed out to her that the price was 20% more than the new competition only 4km in a new facility, she rudely said “ok yeah just go there”.
So I did! I got a unit for 20% less at a newer facility with very friendly service.

This is a very bad business, I recommend everyone avoid this place because the crime in the area is very bad. Additionally, while working here the owner/manager said many concerning things about his clients and staff. He made uncomfortable comments about my health infront of other staff and made it extremely difficult for some clients to afford their rent. The lease also contains very broad language which is concerning as he has made me increase people's rent and asked that auctions be paid entirely in cash... I liked the location and staff but this manager was not a nice person in my opinion.
Indoors, climate controlled, very secure facility which gives a significant level of peace of mind. Price point is significantly higher than storage facilities that are located outdoors with no climate controls and usually are far lighter on security which Schooner seems to have. Although I haven't been storing here long, I don't see there being anyone using any of the units as temporary lodging which is sometimes seen at the outdoor access storage yards. Don't take this the wrong way as sometimes these guests are some of the nicest folks you could meet, and make for great security since they tend to be around when thefts and break ins usually would take place.
Price for a 4'x5' unit which is I'm guessing 7 or 8 feet tall cost roughly $80/mo. first month free with a promise of 6 months minimum rental.
I had an outdoor unit which was 10'x15' and I think 8 or 9 feet high. Initially cost if I recall correctly something around 145$/mo. Over time they would increase the rate until I finally got rid of the space when I think it was something like $190/mo.
Since these are commercial rentals and not residential, they can increase the cost per month at any time and by any amount they wish. This may be something worth asking about before signing up with a particular storage yard. They might be able to amend the contract to agree on a set rate for a certain period of time.

Our experience with this company throughout our move was incredible. The staff were friendly and happy to assist, the facility was well kept and clean at all times. The unit we got was further in the building but it's incredibly convenient and easy to access even with how big it is. My partner and I will be using their services in the future for long-term storage. They are also incredibly safe and secure and we actually feel confident leaving our belongings on the property!
If you are just looking for a storage spot it's not bad. Rates are a bit high and I have personally experienced an extremely rude staff member on more then 1 occasion. In addition, several time the gates and doors were not unlocked at the times that were posted which was frustrating when we wasted over an hour of our movers time and my money when we sat there to wait for someone to show up.
If you're looking for a place to store your stuff and forget about it. not a bad spot. If you are looking to actively visit your unit and expect the business to be open during posted hours, I would advise to look elsewhere.
