Galley Pump
Maybe 100 years ago, long before I was born (well, 30 years ago I was too young to drink, so same thin, yes> ;)

Based on these reminiscent reviews, I dared to check the place out, expecting it to be a throw-back if you will but still fun; what I found was a bunch of (being polite) over-served idiots, dirty and grungy, hardly friendly at all (unless by friendly you mean asking you for money to buy them a beer when showing up at your table uninvited while helping themselves to you cigarettes; well then, if that's what you mean, sure, "friendly" bunch). On the one hand, couldn't help but notice the place supports seniors (do what it takes to maintain a biz, this is true) and as I've a grandmother whom I love, difficult to write this review. But fact and remains: they over serve, and what they serve will in fact take from you. I'd warn my own grandma against this place, unless she wants to lose her purse.

Sad, given the history of the place. But history is long gone and buried, and simply cannot recommend the place, unless you're a beggar looking to pick on ordinary folks for them to buy you a drink.

The best pub-grub
I remember 30 years ago going down to the Galley Pump and the line ups to get in and that wasn't just in the evenings. There where also line ups at lunch time because they served the best pub-grub in the city other than the running Pump (same cook).
We had our championship baseball parties there. It seemed like Doug would never stop bringing out the pitchers of beer.

Best home-style hot roast beef
Years ago, if you didn't get to this place by 6 o'clock there was a lineup at the door. That was for the food. The owner at that time had a great business sense. He realized early that all he needed to do was get the people in, and the business would take care of itself. Get'em in, feed'em, entertain them, and sell then a boat load of beer.

For the longest time it just plain worked.

When business slipped off a bit, he introduced a new feature. Paycheque cashing. Brilliant. Presto, the line-ups were back.

Not to mention, the Galley Pump has been a landmark watering hole in Hamilton for as long as I've been a Hamiltonian.
